Hi all, my caravan is currently at the local dealership getting warrenty work done for water ingress. The workshop phoned me today to say that they had connected my caravan to the 240v supply to put the lights on whilst working on the interior and that all the lights had gone off.He explained that i would have to pay for a knew charger which cost £150, are these a common problem and should I or the dealership or Bailey be paying for this? Whats to say that this would of happened with me.It has know been at the dealership for 2 weeks and now it will be in for at least another week, they quoted 1 week for the warrenty work. What are your comments on this situation and would you push for them to foot the bill? My caravan is a Bailey Ranger 470/4 2005. I look forward to your replys, thanks Mike.

I have had two chargers fail on our 2008 Indiana. Both have been replaced FOC by the dealer, first at 5 months old, second at 13 months. Seems like a bit of a trend here, so I would think there is a good case for claim under 'not fit for purpose'. I presume the same unit is used by many manufacturers - it's just a plug-in unit within the distribution/fuse box.

Dunno about the cost - as I said, I got ours replaced FOC. However, fitting is a doddle if your power supply/fuse box is the same as the Senator Indiana. Three or four wood screws hold the box in place. Then remove the front cover (disconnect mains and trip off the RCD first!) The charger is the silver box within the supply box. It has two connections, one a conventional three pin 240 volt connector (like on your PC or kettle) and a 12 volt plastic connector. Slide out the charger, and unplug the two connectors. That's it! When re-connecting the new one be careful to connect the 12 volt connector the right way - if you get it wrong as I did you will blow the charger fuse.

I had two PSU replaced on my 2004 bailey, so it looks like bailey are still learning?

If you fit junk, don't expect it to last long. And that why i consider bailey to be a buget manufacturer.

Hi, I have just brought my caravan home and reconnected my charger which they had took out.I told the dealer to hold on fitting a new charger but to order one as back up.All the lights came on when connected to a 230v supply, the man at the dealers said that all the lights had failed, how do i know if the charger is working adequately.

when the dealer phoned me about the fault he said that they had connected my caravan to the mains so they could turn on my lights to work on it then the lights went straight off. When i phoned him when i got home with the caravan he said that the lights had beeen on for a few hours before failing which was a change in story to the first. Can anyone please tell me ways of checking whether the charger is working correctly, thanks Mike. ps the caravan is now connected to the mains and the lights are still on.

Hi quick update on the caravan, i have had the lights on with the mains connected for 1 and half hours and all the lights have dimmed, how do i know whether its a charging fault or a failing battery?

Thanks Mike.

If you are still having problems, isolate the battery by Pulling the fuse for the battery charge supply. (or remove the battery).

The 12v lights should work just off the charger, which is really a 12v power supply, it does two jobs.

Test the charger output it should read about 13v plus with the lights off.

Now switch the lights on, the charger output will probably drop a little, but i would still expect 12v.

Leave the lights on for a few hours, check that the charger output has not fallen, if it has the charger could be overheating.

If not all is well. That leaves the battery, remove it and charge it, on a charger fitted with a ammeter. When it has been charging for a couple of hours the current should gradually drop down, eventually it should go to a trickle charge. If it does all is well with the battery.

Next take the battery of charge and see if it will hold a charge for a few days.

Cheers Ray i removed the battery and there was no charge ,the lights wouldnt come on at all, do this mean that the charger is u/s? Does the charger hold a charge when not connected to mains or battery?

As i understand it, the charger doubles as a 12v power supply, so you should be able to run the lights without a battery, provided the charger is supplied with 240 volts.

Some electronic circuits may not be happy with the "quality" of the charger output, but lights if not flourescent should be fine.

However some chargers only give an output when a battery is connected, to complete the circuit. You may have one of these.

I had a problem with my Ranger of the same year with the lights going off. If you havn't already authorised repair, it would be worth checking the wiring to the front internal lights just behind the top front cuboards. I found the wiring shorting the the lighting system due to poor uncoverd connections done by Bailey from new.
