Recently I purchased a smartphone and it had a free gift with it, a Chromebook. Actually at time of purchase, I never realised there was a free gift. Anyway last week the very basic Chromebook arrived, but I could only check it out over the weekend. Now I know why it was given away as a free gift as everything seems to be linked into Google. Now got to find a new home for it as neither of the grand kids want it either. Probable donate it to the Salvation Army or British heart Foundation.

We have an Acer Chromebook, find it great, nothing wrong with Google. Great battery life, does what it states on the box.
It's nice not to be linked to Windows.

I have not used a Chromebook. But the way I see it is this. Google tried to get ahead of the rest by introducing a dumb’ish web based terminal that depended on data residing in the cloud, and the specialist software also running in the cloud and being paid for by subscription.

So there will always be monthly subscriptions depending on what software and how much storage was needed.

Many people do this now but from not so dumb terminals.

When at work, I did similar with my job. In that I could access my work remotely. But I had greater flexibility in that I could use and save locally, or at work. Use my own software, or specialist stuff held on international servers, and also collaborate.

Makes me tired just thinking about it.

Seems that Google were ahead of the curve. But not sure how useful one would be domestically, particularly with suspect WiFi.

This is the very basic freebie version and is awful to use. Too used to using Windows to accept change at this time of our lives. Don't like Chrome anyway. Thinking of trying Duck Duck Go?
eBay is your friend.
Don't do eBay anymore as you only get the funds paid into the account a couple days after the item has been dispatched. At least with a charity they get something out of it.

You must use a different eBay to me, funds are often in my bank within 24hrs of auction end often before I have sent the item.

Having said that I notice that as of the 16th October eBay are changing the payout process so it stays within eBay unless you request a transfer 😟
On a plus note there are now no transaction fees.

I sold tyres about two year ago and the buyer collected. It took 10 days before money was paid into my account. Closed my account and never used eBay since.

Chromebooks are not much different than an Android phone, which is Google based. They have a bigger screen and real keyboard though.

Over time I've converted old PCs, laptops, netbooks to run ChromeOS just for the fun of it. Never used them for anything real though and gave them to a local charity to give to families that were struggling when Covid shut things down and kids had to work from home.

I've also taken old Chromebooks which our grandchildren had for school and loaded Windows on them. Gave these to the same charity as well.

I migrated from Windows to Android some years ago, Android is far better than windows for my day to day use. All my data is available no matter which if my three devices I use.
I still keep an old Windows 10 laptop for my CAD and other odd bits that I need, it gets used about 8 times a year and every time I use it I have to wait for it to update 😠

I used to have a mix of Windows phone and Apple computer. but when I left my phone and wallet on the car roof prior to leaving Lydford Gorge I had choice of whether to continue with the Microsoft Windows phone or move to iPhone. The choice was made for me as shortly after my fiasco Microsoft stopped production of their own phones, which at the time I felt were ahead of Android and Apple phones. Withe the latest IOS 18 software for Iphone and the new MAC OS Sequia I now have pretty well total interoperability between my MAC, iPad and iPhone which I find extreme useful. So I can see why you find having similar with Google Android is a benefit.

I have an hp Chromebook, apart from setting up the caps lock on the keyboard it has been refreshingly simple to use, pretty sure it updates automatically, and as I use Chrome on desktop they are linked. As I am not particularly fussed about tech it suits me.

Too used to using Windows to accept change at this time of our lives.
The older we get the more important it becomes to keep challenging the grey cells.
Well, that's my opinion along I believe with some professionals in the neurological field. Certainly the advice they are giving me in caring for someone developing dimentia, keep them as challenged as possible.

I would have jumped at playing with it, even if I concluded it was not for me, though even that conclusion is best based on gaining a reasonable insight into it.
You don't have to "change" to it.

I had a play with it and set it all up, but didn't enjoy using it. My current laptop is an i7 and although it has some weird quirks like some keys not working, it is only 3-4 years old.

We also have a Samsung tablet so most of the time the Chromebook would be redundant. I would rather it be used by someone that could enjoy it hence the decision to donate it to Salvation Army or British heart Foundation.
