AFTER MONTHS OF speculation,

Ocean Media has announced that the 2012 Boat and Caravan show at Birmingham's NEC has been cancelled. The show, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2011, was set to take place from 12 February 2011.

Show stopper
2012 Boat and Caravan has been subject to a lot of speculation since NCC Events, the caravan industry-backed exhibition company announced that it would run a show at London Excel in February. NCC Events is part of the National Caravan Council (NCC) and members did not want the expense of supporting two shows in February. With all the major caravan and motorhome brands sold in the UK being members, it was clear the show would struggle to find support.

Ocean Media sought the support of caravan dealers in the absence of manufacturer support, and despite expressions of interest, little real support materialised.

Trevor Barratt, CEO of Ocean Media said that “loyal exhibitors, including a number of caravan dealers, and the shows many visitors will feel sorry that due to a lack of support from one element of the industry, the 2012 show has cancelled after more than 50 years”.

No Show? No fear...
The first show organised by NCC Events was the successful Motorhome and Caravan Show held at the NEC last month. By bringing the event in house, NCC Events was able to slash ticket prices and visitor numbers were up by 20% on the comparable autumn event in 2010.

Without 2012 Boat and Caravan, the show landscape for early next year centres around a number of smaller shows, rather than a large national one.

Thats a shame, the NEC is fairly central and access by road is pretty good. Why hold the Feb show at Excel, its awful to get to by road and would involve the congestion charge if you travelled across London.
I would normally go to both shows Oct and Feb but the last show at Excel i didnt bother going and im afraid it will be the same next year.

Each region only needs one show per year - seems to me to be sensible to have one show a year at each of London, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow.
Trying to put on more than one show a year at the NEC is just creating competition.

I often wondered why the caravan industry felt the need for more shows than just say the NEC in October.
Shows do cost a lot of money and as we all know are factored into our purchase price.
The best bits for me have always been the little side stalls with gadgetry etc.
However we do pay entry fees so I wonder just how much it really does cost the Industry?

There is free parking at ExCeL!

That said, I reckon train is the way to get there...
I would think that using public transport like a train and bus could be an expensive option if you are a family of four never mind having to carry lunch for 4 people if you don't want to pay the high prices for food and drink sold inside. Also a bit of a nuisance if you want to buy some accessories at the show. By the time you get home that bargain article seems to weigh 10 tons! LOL!
