Consumption while stopped

A friend was stuck in a traffic jam last night that didn't move for 7 hours, which made me wonder what the consumption of my Jaguar X - Type 2.0 d is at tickover & if any long term damage would be done by running at tickover for so long. Anyone any ideas ?

Hi
Obvious answer is ZERO miles per gallon. But what you want to know is GALLONS per HOUR. Sorry, dunno! But probably better than if it was on carbs.
At technical college, we did a MORSE TEST on an old Ford 10 engine. Had to hurry, it drank a gallon of petrol in 20 minutes.

A diesel engine of around 2 - 2.5 litres will burn around 0.2 Gallon Per hour. A 3 litre petrol around 0.3-.0.35 GPH. A lot depends on the injection sytems and the electronics these days, I don't think you can apply a strict rule.
A british army friend who was stationed in Scandinavia was told to allow the equivalent of 3 gallons for a safe 12 -15 hours survival from freezing in his diesel Volvo 4x4. Relatives who emigrated to Canada allow 4 gallons extra over what they need for their 30 mile commute, they were advised to always keep that ammount spare for when the highway gets blocked or freeze to death

I winter they don't leave home without Sleeping bags in the car, tow rope, shovels, food, water and a 12v kettle. and a jump start power pack. Their Mitsubishi also has two batteries to cope with the cold weather.

The trip computer on the Kuga diesel has an mpg function and it shows 0.2g/h on tickover and that quickly rises to 0.4 if you blip the throttle

That would seem to tally with 15 hours/gallon as posted by OmO above

Although 7 hours is an unusual amount of time to run a car on tick over, it is insufficent time to cause glazing of the bores and consequencal loss of compression.

Hi,

Again, I dunno .... so I'll ask a question instead.

Same scenario .... you are stopped on motorway with engine running. How much fuel do you burn by keeping lamps switched on, and/or running the heater, and/or keeping rear screen heated? Is an onboard computer sensitive enough to register these? If you are in a camper, is your fridge particulary greedy?

I'll wait til the weather improves before asking about air conditioning.

It would be difficult to quantify but using anything that put a load on the alternator or drive belts would use more fuel
We used to show this well in teaching days with a cycle dyno hub and headlamp attached
If you spun the wheel and counted how many times it went round and then did it again with the headlamp switched on you could see the wheel slow considerable when the switch was thrown and the total run time was decreased a lot

Thanks all, a friend who has a 2.0 d Mondeo said his computer shows 0.1 - 0.2 gal/hour when stationary & things like lights & radio don't make much difference.
The trip computer in my Jaguar just shows 0 mpg when stationary.

Is that perpetual motion?
