I have two battery drills.

A rather expensive Makita 18v that I have for work and a little Red Devil (power devil) as I call it.

Both work very well and I often keep the red devil for the caravan as it is a bit lighter and the charger base is smaller making it more convienient to store. At 16.8v there is little difference except with the makita you do get two speeds. However the devil copes well and is only a few seconds slower.

I rely on power tools all the time as I suffer from arthritis of the back and shoulders which eliminatesand screw driving etc.

Best of all my red devil came totally free of charge about 7 years ago fro my local DIY at Hereford. You see, they were so interested in stopping theft of batteries from these drills that they forgot to pass the drill box through the till scanner. I didn't realise until we got home as we had spent

I'd also say 12V & up.

I have a cheap 24V but battery life is a problem. It needs charging before each use on the steadies.

At work we have a VERY nive A.E.G. 18V. WOW! the difference is amazing, the A.E.G. goes forever & will drill 13mm through steel so long as you've got a sharp bit.

Basicly, you get what you pay for.

Consider a drill with a built in light for pitching up in the dark!

I use an 18v drill and it works very well.

To make sure it runs smooth i clean the screw thread with engine cleaner to remove any grease and grit then spray with WD40. Dont grease them as they will get road grit stuck to then and clog up

Just taking Grahams point a little further.

It is advisable to remove heavy deposits of grease on the steady screws as he has said, but spraying with WD40 is not the best answer.

WD40 is not a long term lubricant, it is a water disperser with minimal lubricating properties, which soon evaporates to leave no lubrication whatsoever.

Metal on metal directly is not a thing you want with corner steadies.

After cleaning the screw thread and travel nut , a light spray with white grease is the best thing to do with them.

Hi Damien

White grease is a new one to me. I looked it up and it's teflon based which seems good....... problem is where do you get it from?

Reg, spray white grease is available at Halfords, B&Q or any motor factor outlet
Like most here I use my one and only cordless (18v Bosch)for everything. The battery life is stupendous. I use the torque settings but I manually "*** them up" for a good solid finish.

I purchased a cheap 14.4v drill last year supplied with 2 batteries. 1 of the batteries will not hold a charge and the other has enough power to lift and reposition the 4 corner steadies. You get what you pay for.

I purchased a Black and Decker 18v drill last month and cost
