Hi

Off to Cornwall in a couple of weeks, stopping in the Bodmin area but travelling.

Can anyone recommend any nice beaches which allow dogs? We found a lovely cove last year near Boswinger and will be going back there, (subject to weather conditions of course!). But as we are planning to travel all over Cornwall, any suggestions appreciated.

Many thanks.

We've stayed near bodmin a few times in a holiday cottage, I would recommend the Camel Trail, yes - I know its not a beach !but it really is a lovely walk, quiet through wooded, river lined pathways.

You can walk as far as you want as the route does go all the way to Padstow,...we started much further in at a place called "Pooley's Bridge", this then goes to Dunmere, then onto Bodmin and then on again to Wadebridge and Padstow, so quite a few places to join it. Wadebridge - Padstow is very popular with cyclists so we always get on it much further inland.

We've done it loads of times with the dog (we cycle and we have one of those cart things on the back of the bike - which is supposed to fit 2 children) - but our German Shepherd fits in it quite comfortably!

Beaches -

Trebarwith Strand - nr Tintagel, small car park, beach side cafe - dog friendly

Harlyn Bay - very nice, huge car park in adjoining field, sweeping bay, lovely views - dog friendly

Constantine Bay - vaguely remember this one, again I think its a sandy bay - dog friendly

There are loads in north cornwall - but the "surfy" ones like Polzeath dont allow dogs in the summer.

check out - www.ncdc.gov.uk

and click on the beaches thingy

sorry to hog your thread - but thought of another

Daymer Bay - near Rock/St Minver,...medium car park, access down few steps to huge beach - dog friendly

Nearby Rock is very popular in the summer (quite posh!)..trendy beach side cafe's, you can get the foot ferry across to Padstow and also nice pasty shop at Rock.

Popluar surfing beach - lifeguards on duty ;-)

Perranporth is ideal for dogs. We go (nearly) every year and our monsters love it. Also lovely walks on top of the cliffs and over Penhale sands. This makes a good round trip from Perranporth center (or park in the (free) carpark at the entrance to Perransands and walk by the golf course).

Thanks ever so much for the tips, I really appreciate it. When I get in, I'll makea a note of your recommendations. I'll have a look at the Camel Trial although the young dog can't walk too far at the moment as he is skeletally immature.

I think I read somewhere you are from Devon. I've entered my SBT into the North Devon show (Torrington). A question, is there a beach around that area? The reason I ask is that we won't be able to leave our other dog at the campsite and it's not feasible to take her to the show as she hates other dogs. So I was wondering if there was anywhere in that area where my husband could take her for the day? If push comes to shove, he said he's happy to stay at the campsite with the dog on the day of the Devon show.

Thanks.

Lisa

Lisa you have no need of getting lost on the Camel trail, just follow the camels dumps. You might be even lucky enough to spot one, look out and above the grasses and you might see an arabs fez. He'll be riding the camel. While on the subject of camels did you hear this one -

Baby camel- "hey mom, why have we camels got long eyelashes".

Mother camel - "to stop the sand going in our eyes when in the desert son".

Baby camel- "hey mom,why have us camels got big feet".

Mother camel - "to stop us sinking in the sand in the desert son".

Baby camel- "hey mom, why have us camels got humps".

Mother camel - "so we can store water in the desert son, now run along and play".

Baby camel- WELL WHAT THE *%$@?! ARE WE DOING IN LONDON ZOO???

oops - just thought of another :O)

Why do they call camels ships of the desert????

Because they are full of Arab seamen. hehheh!

Be generous Your Moddyship, it aint that bad, lolol.

Hey Lord B

Just shows how typing errors can change the whole meaning of something!

It's a 'camel trial' - now that would be worth watching!! No need for Gaylord to walk too far either.

LISA.

Closest beaches to Torrington would be Braunton and Westward Ho!

Braunton Burrows is very nice, almost like moorland next to the beach (with sheep and horses loose on the moory bit) and then a sweeping bay.

Westward Ho, a bit more touristy with usual beach shops and stuff. There is the harbour at Appledore v.near to Westward Ho.

Bit further on from Braunton is Saunton Sands - MAHOOSIVE/LONG big beach, loads of dunes, always windy, but great to blow out the cobwebs, our dog loves Saunton..little beach cafe by the car park and the car park is right next to the beach.

Another trail (yes she says! - dis-used railway line) is the TARKA TRAIL which you can get on at Torrington (by the Puffing Billy pub)...goes for miles from Torrington to Braunton following the river, lovely countryside and again popular with cyclists.

Hi Lisa, we were talking to the local Dog Warden in the park a couple of days ago. She had her dogs with her, 2 Staffie puppies, one 10 weeks old and one 5 months. Nice dogs but I was a bit concerned that she was happy to let them play with our 2 GSDs. Our dogs are very friendly with people and dogs and our young one loves to play but her dogs were MAD, very friendly but MAD! Our youngest is over a year old now and very big with BIG feet. I was so worried she would step on the little pup that I put her back on the lead. It seemed a bit irresponsible for someone in her position to put her dogs health at risk like that. What a picture though when the tiny puppy sat down with our big old shepherd and pushed herself right under the big dogs front legs. Jim.

Hi Jim

Some staffs are MAD! I'm really lucky with my little Gaylord, he's the original Mr Cool. My other dog is a staffie x and as I've said in other posts, a total psycho at times.

Maybe the dog warden could assess that your dogs were friendly and unlikely to do any damage to hers. I suppose it's up to her.

If I see an unfamiliar dog approaching us whether it's on the lead or not, I always put Gaylord on his lead for his own safety.

Can't wait till he gets on one of those beaches and I take him for his first swim!

Lisa.

Just a couple more thoughts on Perranporth. The car park that I recommended by Perransands is an ideal place to let your dogs stretch their legs, its a beautiful spot ( if you like wide open landscapes) but its quite a long walk to the beach from there and would probably be too much for your little one. There is a car park in Perranporth right by the beach (if you can get in it) and this might be better for you, but it is very popular and you get lots of dogs there. Jim.

Thanks everyone. Can't wait to visit some of these beaches.

This time tomorrow we'll nearly be there. See you in three weeks.

Lisa.
