Hi Jo

I haven't been to Dorset. I just remember when I was looking into Cornwall about three years ago, a colleague of mine said he and his wife and kids (about the same age as yours now), went to Dorset for two weeks and he said it was the most boring hol they had ever been on. (Apologies to people from Dorset).

You know I love Cornwall, I'm a beach person myself and if the weather is good (not likely this time!!), you can't beat finding a small cove, reading a good book, going for a swim in the sea. Heaven. I hear it's good for kids too.!

I think Cornwall is definately more commercialised now but on the plus side, the main road down there are very good. The first time we went was about in 1983 and we had a mad dog which stood on the back seat of the car for 300 miles each way. LOL.

We are trying another site this year as our 'usual' campsite has hiked its prices up.

(You'll never hang yourself will you?). LOL

Living in Devon, we are lucky enough to visit the 2 counties regularly over the years.

In our opinion Dorset is better.

Cornwall is like London outside of London now :-(

There are not so many local cornish people about as all the people from London have moved down there or bought second holiday homes. Take the seaside town of Rock for example - full of yuppie wealthy city folk.

Cornwall is expensive, the parking is expensive, over commercialised and now even in low season the region is busy. We are going to give Cornwall another chance and we are visiting in September/October for a couple of weeks but some campsites are still asking for

jo-anne, I live in Dorset, love it, but am spending a week in Cornwall at St Ives. Both counties have their attractions but it really is a personal choice.

Like Lord B I am intrigued by your quest to find the best sites in England and did muse at one point whether you were a writing a book.

It would help if you gave us a few details e.g. your family make up ( teenagers, children, husband likes fishing etc), and then we could tailor our replies to your needs.

Seriously, and the above is tongue in cheek, and a gentle tease, there is lots of info at www.resort-guide.co.uk where you can select any county and find lots of info for any tourist.

Happy travelling, hope to see you in Dorset. Ray

I agree that Cornwall has got very busy and expensive over the years but St Ives is our favourite place in England. I know that it's very busy but it's so beautiful there, the beaches, the art galleries, the restaurants etc. When we're home we just want to be back there and we're going on Saturday!!!!

There are some other places where we feel the same as this but they are in Scotland.

jo-anne, I will be stayaing at a temporary holiday site (THS) run by the Cornwall DA of the C&CC at St Ives Rugby Club. Cheap, well stewarded within walking distance of the town centre and beaches and the Rugby Club bar open as well. I've been before but my first return in 8 years or so.

If you come to Dorset a couple of sites I like are East Fleet near weymouth and Ulwell Cottage near Swanage both good for a family holiday.

Jo-Anne,

We have booked Trethem Mill (st mawes - looks lovely) and Tregarton park for our Sept/oct cornish holiday. We were going combine with Polmanter site (St Ives) in October but they wouldnt take our 2 night booking in advance and said we should turn up "on spec", 3 night advance booking rule is crazy in October seeing as all the site facilites are closed and they are still charging

chelsea, the people who own wareham forest used to own carnon downs.

when you go down and you get chance check carnon downs out i dont think you would be disapointed. we are in the green field with just a grass pitch and that backs onto the school playing fields and they are all off school. i wanted to go dorset this year but craig and reece wanted cornwall so they won but now reece is moaning that cornwall is a long drive. it takes about 6 hours with about 3 stops for the kids and the dog. dorset would be about 4 with 3 stops.

nevermind theres always october.

thanks everyone keep the comments coming

Hi jo-anne

Its me again, just back from Broadway. great weekend, weather was dry and hot all the time,we think the site is better than Cirencester and Moreton, but then it was our first visit and we got a pitch right next the shower block in the lower field.

We are regular visitors to Dorset, as it is easy reach on a Friday night, although our favourite site is Binghams Farm, but is adults only, there are loads of things to do, you have Bournemouth and Poole for wet days, plus all the museums you mentioned, and Monkey World too, the main attraction seems to be that Dorset is relatively unspoiled and undiscovered, for us Cornwall is over commercialised, but as you know we will be there in August, just need our regular fix.

keith, broadway is my favorite site its only an hour away from our storage for us. its a quiet site with huge pitches and its such a chilled out site.

we like moreton but its a very busy, noisy site and i dont like the fact that you have to put your car in front of your window of the van. i like to look out of my windows not look at my car all weekend.

where did you visit while at broadway then.

Hi jo-anne

Bit of a duty really family graves in Arrow near Alcester so it was our turn to do the flowers etc, but Stratford was quiet on Saturday, quietest we have known it in fact, perhaps the weather recently had put the tourists off, Farmers Market in Rother Street was good, visited Broad lane at Alcester, invested in new wind break fits in the awning channel and you can then use it on hard standing if the other end reaches the grass. Evesham wasn't very busy either, agree with you about the site, definately relaxing, almost everybody was friendly, shame there isn't more room for the dog, otherwise great site.

There is only one answer to this quest - it has to be DORSET every time. Have been to Cornwall three times and have never been so disappointed in all my caravan life. It rained each time, everything was expensive and a total rip off. Almost ended up in a fight with the camera man at Land's End over taking a photo of my wife near the sign post - did not ask for our village name to be displayed just wanted a photo to say we had been there. He threatened to rip my camera off me and expose the film thereby ruining all the photos on it. Land's End is a financial pit especially if you have children. A large commercial site at Newquay (no name - know what I mean) was filthy as well as expensive and south Cornwall was also very expensive and local people were very abrupt - as if they wanted our money but not our presence there (Looe and Polperro area).

Dorset is far nicer, cheaper and far more to see and visit even with children. Just spent an excellent two weeks at Pear Tree Farm, Wareham and enjoyed every minute - rain at night but good weather during the day. Therefore for us it is DORSET.

I live in dorset and spend a lot of weekends caravanning locally. We are going to Tregarton Park in cornwall on Sept 15th for a week. Super deal in Sept on this site.

One thing that is definete is that the climate in Dorset is much better than Cornwall but we are looking forward to our week in Sept.
