Hi Folks, I'm considering getting a caravan but I need to check out the cost implications, after Ive bought the van plus servicing and insurance then comes the actual cost of going away, in my parents day sites used to charge between £3 and £7 a night but now costs are higher. I have two children that are 2 and I may use electric and awning all depends on the cost. my parents say the days of caravaning as a cheap and fun means of a family holiday are over. Is this the case? how much should I expect to pay for a pitch high season and low, my areas of interest are North Wales, Lancashire (Lytham St Annes in particular) and Skegness area - Thanks

Hi Mary

Like everything today prices have increased from your parents day. That's no surprise!

Have a look at the Caravan Club web site. They publish prices for their sites. They also do Certificated locations which are independently run "5 max caravans" sites. These are cheaper depending on what facilities you want.

www.caravanclub.co.uk

Also try this independent site

Hi mary, nice to see you are getting your children into the caravan sceen early in life.

About prices, well you are right about what your parents say, that it is not cheap now.

Saying that though, this all depends on what you want from your time out with the caravan. If you join the Caravan Club and use the Certified location sites, then you could get away for as little as

Did notice that Mary's children are very young, I think she said 2 and 1, so a CL site would be OK providing it had ehu so if I were her I would make the most of these sites because when they get older they will definitely want bigger sites with swimming pools etc.

cl's are cheaper and quieter obviously & a great platform to work from, but in reality this is not a cheap hobbie like people think anymore, unless you rally & you are a hardn'd season caravanner you would avoid it like the plague, pitching on a field in the middle of no where for a fiver a night with no EHU.I am not trying to put off as I love it & would be somewere every weekend if I could, just be prepared to do some homework into were you want to stay,uk campsite is brilliant for locations & reviews, Caravan club sites are realy good ,clean & a joy to wake up to in the morning, problem is this time of the year you will be lucky to get a pitch anywere at the weekends till end of the year.there prices range from

I'd just like to point out that Daves perception of rallies where you 'pitch in the middle of nowhere for a fiver a night' are slightly misleading.

I don't know what rallies Dave has been on but the Easter rally that we attended last week was on a pitch with ehu and all other amenities, there was a good pub / restaurant next door and we had two nights of first class entertainment all for

People want more on the sites these days swimming pool , club house etc but you will pay for this,if you are going to use these then you can justify the cost, but if you dont it is very difficult.

No doubt that site fees have gone up but there is still plenty of choice from the large to the small sites. For me I quite often pay around

As folks on here say, prices vary widely depending on facilities. We did a site with outdoor pool and nice play area, ehu, decent shower block etc, near the Suffolk coast for

Hi

If you look at different sites on the cc web site you will see different prices for different sites. With children under school age you can save money by going outside the main school holidays. Some cc sites have baby rooms and family rooms in the toliet blocks, a good option with young children. The main sites have a laundry room with washing machine and tumble drier, you pay to use them but we have found them useful at times. Our youngest was 2 when we started caravanning, I had previously caravanned as a child with my parents and grandparents.

Hope this helps

I suppose if you only go away for one or two weeks a year its not a cost effective way to holiday, especially once you have added all the running costs such as insurance, servicing etc.

For us it works out much cheaper than a two week stay in a self catering property, but thats more to do with the fact we bought a second hand model and we also use it at weekends throughout the year. It paid for itself in the first year.
