Hi Darren,

Craigie Gardens is my local site so I have never stayed there, However there is a huge building development going on there just now. So instead of being surrounded by woods the site is surrounded by building works.

The site does get a good reputation.

Imo it would be like going to a Hotel in Spain and finding it in the middle of a building site you would be annoyed, but if you knew the building works were there and booked anyway you would be expecting it.

Stephen.

Hi Darren,

We were at Craigie Gardens for 4 days a fortnight ago. We use this site about three or four times a year (Were from Glasgow). The site itself is kept to the usual high caravan club standards. Toilets/shower block was immaculate. Good spacious pitches, all hardstanding. Site kept clean and tidy. The downside is, as the prevoius post states - your surrounded by a building site at the moment (New ayr campus I think). The building work is not due to end until September 2011. The approach road is currently controlled by traffic lights. Even with the lights it was a tight squeeze getting back out the site due to three lorries trying to get into the building site. This new building in my opinion has ruined a great site which had lovely surroundings. The wardens are doing a great job in keeping the site tidy despite of the work going on all around them.

stephen, what you say about it being local to you reminds me of what my father told me when i was talking last year about taking up touring.

he always said that no matter where you come from you will always want to get away to other areas to holiday, relax etc.

but, he also said if i did buy a caravan to use the local sites as well as once you were set up and settled you wouldnt have a clue as to where you were, whether it was the maidens or skeggy.

bit of truth in there ye know :)

to the original post, i havn't been there but have heard great reviews, the building work going on is a new annex of ayr college :)

Hi MacH

We do pitch locally for a quick weekend away, Planning on going to The Ranch in Maybole to test drive our new van, Only 20 mins away. 2 mins down the road is too close to home, I'd rather sleep in the drive way than move it a mile or 2 and pay the site fees, lol

Going back to Craigie Gardens, If your planning to come for Horse Races etc then it is still ideal, If you are coming for a walk in woods give it a miss.

have been here a few times and loved it, the good thing is its only a 10 minute walk to the city centre and it was a beautiful walk before they started the building so not sure what its like now. but wardens very friendly and welcoming from what i remember.

The building work at cragie is to replace the existing University West of Scotland buildings which are located in another part of the park. The Ayr campus is mainly teacher and nursing degree courses. The old university buildings and grounds have been sold off for houses. It is nothing to do with Ayr college which is completly seperate.

William,

Whatever the building work is is not really the issue - it is the fact that the site IS surrounded by a building site & has totally ruined this lovely park.

Hi Daren,

My advice, go and enjoy.

How many sites of such a standard are open at this time of year in Scotland?

We visited two weeks ago, warden warned of overnight working next door, not a sound.

Ok the access has traffic lights and you can see a few tower cranes - it was never a site to view the hanging gardens of babylon or the proverbial herds of wilderbeast.

A great wee site with welcoming wardens and a town if you want some shopping and a seafront with a promenade and access to the Ayrshire coastal trail.

I coudn't agree more about it ruining a great site. I have been going for a few years now and still miss the tearoom which was just outside the site. Hopefully when the work is completed it will again be a great site. The only reason I commented on who the work is for is I have heard and read so many variations on why and what is happening.I thought I would let people know the real story.

We have just come back from 10 days at Craigie gardens. As said previously this is still a lovely site despite the building work going on outside. The access road is stilll partly controlled by traffic lights but these should be be removed in the next few weeks as the upgrading of the access road is nearing completion. The noise was not an issue, yes you can hear the lorries coming and going but this is practially stopped by 6pm and little activity at weekends. The outside of the toilet block, reception area and water points have been upgraded in the last week. The most worrying problem is that the local council are playing silly beggars in renewing the current lease which still has approx. 10years to run and it goes without saying that the CC will be unwilling to make any major investment until this issue is resolved. The council has already sold all the ground around the site for this new development, so are they looking to get rid of the site also???

If you would like to see this lovely site continue to operate please contact your MP or MSP to put pressure on the council to resolve this matter before it becomes too late.

Rant over, i feel better now.

William

Ps This is another William, not the who has already made a posting regarding this site.

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone was at this site over the easter weekend and maybe give us an update on what the building work/approach road is like.

Many Thanks.
