Hi Barney,

I work in Rotterdam, commuting from Buckinghamshire almost every other week - and so I drive past Koksijde on a regular basis.

First of all, Belgium is a great country - good food and a candidate for the best beer in Northern Europe. And you'll get a great reception as long as you don't speak French to the locals - this region is Vlaams (Dutch) speaking.

English will do fine, Northern Belgium and Dutch people don't expect others to speak their language (it's usually a surprise for them when they realise I'm English - because my accent is "unusual")

You understand that these are seaside campsites, and if you haven't booked you may want to look at the Dutch ACSI web-site http://www.eurocampings.co.uk/en/ - De Blekker is supposedly quite quiet.

To do:

Brugge (Bruges) is a great city to visit, beautiful buildings, and interesting shops. The city square is worth a visit, maybe to sit and drink a coffee or eat a meal, some of the bars have over 300 different beers. Plus brewery tours.

Damme (to the North and East of Brugge) is also really pretty - a small village square with six or so restaurants and bars. Prices are more reasonable.

Koksidje, Westende, and all of the sea side towns are interesting in different ways.

thanks for your comment robert, can you tell me what the site is like? as its ok having plenty to do and see, but if the site is crap it'll spoil the holiday. i have camping cheques and don't want to drive so far from dunkurk so it's either de blekker, kompas camping westende or kompas camping nieuwpoort, its just me and the wife, not bothered if the sites are for kids, adults, or what ever, as long as they are clean, friendly and spacious. and electric of course. thanks again, barney.

Hi,

We haven't stayed at De Blekker - and they don't seem to have a web-site, but the Kompas sites are rated 4star by ACSI and are more than OK - and unlike Nieuwpoort, Westende benefits by not having a waterslide.

The Westende facilities are at least as good as C&CC, and there's not too many fixed pitches. Shopping - visit the local towns.

There are some very nice camp-sites on the banks of the Westerschelde river near Biervliet, in a SSI nature reserve, to the north of Brugge - but actually in Holland.

Also someone on this board knows of a good camp-site near Damme, but I can't remember who - maybe they will pick up this thread.

Hi Barney,

I speak Dutch and French, and was going to offer to translate the De Blekker site for you - but there's a link to the English pages:

http://www.deblekker.be/en/default2.htm
Looking at the front page - I see it's a member of "Groene Camping" - Green Camping - good. I see in 2000 they won European campsite of the year from the Dutch ANWB (a bit like the AA)

Looks good.

Robert
