Hi Bryan, we've been to the Dingwall site about three times and never had any problems with midges (I usually get bitten to death LOL). Although the site is close to the town, there is no noise apart from the odd train, nice riverside walks too.

Bryan

I've only experienced midges on the west coast, never on the east. CC site inland, Grummore by Loch Naver is supposed to have loads of midges but somehow I've always missed them.

When are you going?

Althought the CC advises insect repellents for Grummore, I never seem to have a problem either!

IMO the worst places are Kinlochewe CC site, Inverewe Gardens, Glen Coe C&CC sites Oban C&CC and Morvich, sometimes. The most horrendous place we ever went to was the CC site at Ardgartan (since closed), it wasn't too bad during the day, but in the evenings.........!!!

The worst place for us was many augusts ago at Castle Sween site by Loch Sween Kintyre. Nearly bitten to death.

Even the Benson & Hedges didn't work!

Us lucky West coast people are the only ones honoured with the pleasure of the midge LOL. So here's a locals top tips.

Make your self unattractive to them. eat loads of Garlic or start taking Garlic tablets about a week before your trip. That way it begins to ooze out your pores. Others won't smell it but midges can. Do not use perfumed products IE soap, deoderant etc only use perfume free stuff. The wee blighters love bananas (strange I know) so don't eat bananas. Hope these tip help.

Hi Bryan. A monk spying on landing vikings meeting up at Broadford before the battle of Largs noted and that they wore "Many sprigs of lavender about their clothes to ward of midges" Don't come to the west coast without sun lotion laced with a a good dose of lavender oil.

HI! Bryan i work out of Dingwall the site is about 500yds walk to the centre of town, the railway line is at the southend of site just over the fence after a couple of days you will not hear them only doing 15mph into the station (100yds up the road)the site is well setout as usual for c&cc sites plent to do in this area .Inverness 16mls away .great train journey to Kyle of Lochalsh (west coast of Scotland) or train to Wick (north of Scotland)Lochness only 30 minutes away as for the midgies get Boots skin so soft rub on first thing in the morning works great (get it supplied by work )never get bothered with them .but the further west you go the more you will get them not so bad during the day only when the wind drops at night then the little blighters come out .

cheers Duggie
