We are planning a trip to France/Spain this winter & would like to know your experiences of taking pets across the channel. Would you recommend the ferry or the tunnel?

Our two very well behaved!! girls like to let everyone know they are in the car whilst we are with them. But soon settle when they are left alone! ( or at least we think they do but we are not there!)

Look forward to hearing from you.

Taken our dog to France this year and last. Used Tunnel as not only quicker but the dog stays with you. Extremely simple check in for the dog on the way back. No problems what so ever.

Hi Ellis,

Which route would you recommend? we were planning to get to spain using only one overnight stop at Clermont Ferrand but have been told to expect tempratures of -5 overnight in early Dec.

We are now toying with the idea of two overnight stops in France going via Tolouse where it will hopefully a little warmer.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hello.

So far we have taken the dogs on two return trips across the channel which has entailed three journey's through the tunnel and one on the boat ( Cherbourg to Poole ).

From that experience we would totally agree with Brian.

We try to give them a good long run to tire them out as near to the departure time as is practicable as a result of which, they have been asleep from boarding the train 'till we drive off straight onto the motorway system.

On the boat, they were in quite a state at the end of the journey due, we think to the noise and excessive vibration that occurs as the boat is slowly manoeuvred into its berth. So from now on it's the tunnel every time which, as we only live ten miles from the ferry terminal at Poole, says quite a bit.

Regards,

Olivier

We went to France on the ferry which was ok but you have to leave the dog in the car. Once we were in france our dog loved it. This year we are taking 2 dogs and are travelling via the tunnel this should be better as its only 30 mins crossing and you stay with them. I would encourage people on holiday with them as at the end of the day they are part of the family.

Hi folks - often thought of taking dog to France, its just the "vet checks" that put me off! In simple terms what does one have to do either side of channel in terms of "health checks" and roughly how much?

Cheers

Hi John.

The sequence is simple. You take them to the vet for the treatment required by the Pet Passport Scheme. You then have to wait for not less than 24 hours nor more than 48 before you can bring them back into the UK. The prices vary greatly so ask around - you should be able to get it done for
