Dogs...

My two dogs, whilst totally adorable and totally non aggresive, can be a little frisky.

One dog in particular is nervy of other dogs when she's on a lead, if she can't get to have a sniff she'll bark and jump about.

I'm a little worried that this may upset fellow caravanners as unless they know, they might think my dog is just an aggressive little urchin and wonder why on earth we've brought her caravanning.

The other dog makes crying noises when he's excited too.

I'm planning to try and request pitches that are either shielded or out of the way a bit, at least until the dogs get used to caravanning on a regular basis.

Are most people understanding with problems like this or are we likely to get flung off the site?

I have two young very energetic Springer Spaniels. Soft as brushes but one is a bit of a chicken at first. So she tends to initially bark. We just leave them in the car or tied to the tow ball while we set up.

We give them a good hard walk both on and off the lead. They soon get used to their surroundings and the people on site.

We also try and pitch away from the usual path to the toilets and dog walk.

Cheers

Hi Kelly,

Our Westie is the same, as soon as she sees another dog she starts making crying noises and yaps constantly. Our other dog is completely not bothered but the Westie makes a terrible noise.

We try to walk them as much as possible and as soon as we have set up we take them for a walk around site and let them say Hello to passing dogs.

When we arrive we leave them in the basket in the car and then put them on their peg outside until the awning is up, we then put them in the awning with their bed from the car.

The dogs sleep in the awning when away otherwise they would be up on the beds in the van, we keep a thermostat heater on all night and the curtains closed so they can't see any other dogs walking past, whilst away once the people next door left their rubbish out and a fox came, the dogs must have heard it and went mad, if they hadn't been tied on I dread to imagine what would have happened so make sure they are tied on.

I would not worry, when you get on site and get pitched up the dogs will soon settle in their own space.

A major benefit with caravan club sites is you can pick your own pitch. We always look for one away from the main paths and kids park as we have a lab who gets nervous around strangers.

excellant! so mine won't be the only springer that poses as a rottie then lol

I guess we'll need to go away at regualr intervals to make sure they leanr the acceptable behaviour.

Apologies to any non dog lovers that end up pitched next to us. She wont bite I promise!

One of our Schnauzers will sometimes bark at other dogs and another time she doesn't bother. The other two don't bark. Theres no set pattern with Polly which or what kind of dog she barks at. If the other dog is friendly once they touch noses she's ok. She's not nasty at all and as never growled or gone to bite dog or man but if she starts barking it's embarrassing although we've tried everything. It's no bother to us but we do get some down the nose looks off some snooty b*******ds .... heh! heh! heh!

Why have so many of us got more than one dog?

We're mad but we just couldn't have left the little shy brown faced one behind. She's the one that tugged the maimsahibs strings , the rest is history.

Hi there. We caravanned for 16 years with our Golden Retriever until he died last year. I used to worry if he barked, which was very seldom. People generally are very good and always stopped to speak to him. Lord I wouldn't say people were snooty because they were upset about dogs barking. Not everyone is a dog lover like myself (when I go to the toilet block takes me about an hour by the time I talk to all the dogs on my way)I think it is a lovely way to holiday with dogs. Most people understand if it only happens occasionally. I have to say we once had a pitch beside someone with a small dog that never stopped barking. Woke us up at 6.30 in the morning on its extended lead right outside our window. This completely spoiled our stay as one of the enjoyments of caravanning is the peace and quiet.

We've got 2 dogs (a Golden Retriever and Black Labrador 10 & 9 yrs old).

Both are so laid back it puts me to shame.

Although we've had either a motorhome or caravan for many years this year is the first time we've had the dogs with us properly (in-laws always used to look after them but they cant anymore).

Despite this they've both settled into the life style very well.

They will occassionaly bark , well more woof if you know what I mean , if some one comes to talk to us in the van / awning. But after a couple of woofs and a firm 'quiet' from me they'll toddle of back to their favoured spot and go back to sleep.

Our 2 are quite happy doing their own thing , the dont bother with other dogs much they'll often just walk on by.

As for having 2 , well it was partly because the Golden got to a year old and was showing signs of boredom (chasing his tail , chewing stuff he shouldn't) and the Behaviourist at our vets suggested he needed more doggy company rather than human (inlaws , again, at home most the day looking after dogs for us). So we got a 2nd dog and both are very happy together. Lab tends to lead the way , then when the mischiefs occurring she'll slink off and give us puppy dog eye's and leave the Golden to take the rap!!!! typical woman!!!

Just remember to be relaxed around your dogs , they'll pick up on any kind of anxiety you may have and react to it. You're their master and as such you need to command that pack leader hierarchy.

It's such a shame parents don't take the same trouble as these dog owners do...they don't seem at all bothered by the racket their ghastly offspring make.

Phil I agree with you. That is why we are now choosing more and more to go to CLs or Adults only sites. It is not that I do not like children (I work in a school) I cannot relax as they run through the pitches and kick footballs about, with not even a glance from the parents. This seems to have got worse over the last few years.

most pose by sitting quietly watching the world go by as they should, in my experience most rotties are very well behaved and probably have the most responsible owners in the dog world, as we are crucified by the public at the slighjtest hint of a problem, by the way I am on my third rottie now, the latest now only 14 weeks old,in my opinion you couldn't get a better dog,......Mark

sorry if they came across disrespectful about rotties - that wasn't my intention.

What I meant was my dog being quite small trying to give others the impression she's a big solid dog

i wouldnt worry, people who are dog owners or dog lovers will understand.....as long as you are seen to be in control and being a rsponsible dog owner then it will be fine. dogs bark thats what they do, if ours do they are told to be quiet and they shut up then. we went to a site tho where an older couple had no respect for other people and there dog was barking constantly and not telling it to be quiet or moving it so it wouldnt bark. mind u they let it s**t anywhere and didnt pick it up and walked through pitches and flicked *** butts everywhere they walked, so it probably wasnt the dogs fault with owners like that lol. any way the dogs will chill out once they are settled and u will allhave a good time.

Quote PATRICIA ... Lord I wouldn't say people were snooty because they were upset about dogs barking. Not everyone is a dog lover.

I didn't mean those who hate dogs PATRICIA, I meant other dog owners, those with oh such perfect pooches who are probably the ones who leave their pooches dumps all over the dog walks :O)

Kelly don't worry i knew what you meant about Rotties that's why i put the wink after my comment. I have a spanial too and she sure can have a lot to say for herself sometimes lol.

I can walk all around a site with my Rottweiler ignoring all the barking dogs but my spanial will give them what for if i let her (i don't) lol

Our Kerry Blue Terrier normally waits a day before she lets all the dogs that pass our van know, that they will be challenged every time they venture near to our van, which ever direction they come from she will stand their with her rubber bone jumping up and down like Tigger before running around the back of thevan and repeating her performance .

We clip the long lead to the one of the rear stabilizers

As such we do not get those people who like to take short cuts across other peoples pitches.

When we take her out for usual exersise , when passing other dogs she completly ignores them

I totally agree....we tried bank holiday last year on a "family friendly " site ....what an absolute hell on earth ! - ever since that awful weekend we have gone on adult only where poss.

Not all parents are as bad , but some of the kiddies we have come across have been devil re-incarnate !

Give me a pack of pooches any day ! - they may be hard work at times but they don't answer back , kick you on the shins or swear profusely to try and look big! -

p.s - apologies to all parents of well behaved kiddies out there but we had a weekend from hell after being sited next to the "Battersby's" for our hol.

:c(

Don't fret about your pooches chick...all will be ace when they have settled into their new surroundings.

:c)

Hi We have been taking our dogs (2 labs) caravaning for 4 years ow and find all sites and fellow caravaners are great with the dogs. They bark when other dogs come near their pitch. But most people have dogs some sites more than most. Mine don't bark all the time, but we don't leave them. The old lab is 13 now and can get a bit off with other male dogs.

Regards

JAckie
