Our Dometic Fridge stopped working on 240v while we were away. Worked fine on gas so no problems as such. However, I prefer to use the mains I've paid for so I want to repair the fridge. I assume it is the heating element that's broken. ( Fuse etc. OK and the indicator light for mains comes on.) Is this a DIY job or do I have to take the caravan to a dealer? Quite a competent DIYer and confident and capable with mains.

Iestyn,

If you have a copy of the Haynes Caravan Manual 3rd edition - then fridge servicing is covered.

However - unless you can replace the heating cartridge without removing the fridge or breaking a gas joint - then it is recommended that a competent person make / break the gas connection...

If you have a multi-meter, the cartridge should have a resistance of 480 ohms (probably with a 10% tolerance) - if the resistance is OK cold and not hot, or the other way around - it's probably a failure of the ceramic around the heater element rather than an element breakage - but it's a replacement anyway.

Iestyn.

DIY. Provided you can get access by removing the external vent panels it's just a matter of working through the holes like a gyaenacologist with spanners!!
