Hello all, in need of some information. I have just been out for the first time in my bailey senitor indiana series 5 and the skylight above the fixed bed is very drafty when the wind blows, on looking at it it seems as if there should be a gasget of some sort around the edge of the perspex skylight.so if anyone could shed some light referance the gasget I would be most gratefull.

kind regards

Mick

Hello Michael,

The rooflight forms part of the fixed ventliation and there is no gasket around the lower edge of the rooflight.

As the fixed ventilation is for your safety it MUST NOT be obstructed in any way.

Usually it helps to pull the blakout blind across, but you will still get air circulating.

we have the same problem with our series 6 indiana,in fact when i checked it today in storage there were little bits of leaves on the bed fallen through the vent and if the blackout screen is pulled it rattles against the guides in a strong wind.I,d rather have the sylight from motorhome with no ventilation and put an additional vent somewhere else to compensate, when its out of warranty of course.

I sometimes wonder if the designers of some caravans ever test their designs.......

Why would you put a skylight, with it's potential to let in draughts, rain and even bits of leaf over a fixed bed?

Thanks for repling I think the designers do not put enough though into some of there designs, and surtainly do not try them out in the autumn or winter months.

Michael, I take your point about the Omnivent and why is that not used to supply some of the required high level venting, but not all caravans are fitted with an Omnivent, so it cannot be guaranteed as a supply in every case.

Any caravan needs a certain amount of fixed ventilation, the regulation says you need a minimum of 14000 square millimetres in a van with 10 square meters of floor area.

With that in mind and to get CE approval rooflight manufactures design this minimum into a standard 400x400mm rooflight.

So while fixed ventilation is obviously vitally important, most vans have more than one rooflight and so exceed the minimum, perhaps by double, treble or more.

While not wise to reduce it to a minimum, some investigation then will discover if you can remove the offending without compromising your safety.

In point of fact, many motorhomes suffered from Heki rooflights 'whistling' due to air passing through the ventilation while on the move, for this reason Heki supply their rooflights and I quote; with or without compulsory fixed ventilation!

We have the mini heki fitted above the fixed bed in our Wyoming and also find it to be a bit draughty at times. We find that leaving the blackout blind partially open helps stop the draught and also stops the blind from rattling as much as when it is fully closed.

Those poor designers can't win can they ? I find the positioning of our heki to be perfect for hot & sticky summer nights.

The mini-Heki and midi-Heki both come with optional 'fixed ventilation' and we chose to replace our standard rooflight (not a Heki) which was very draughty with a mini-Heki without the fixed ventilation. We now have a draught free bed and no leaves coming in.

Unfortunately the larger Heki and the super-duper remote control(!!!!!) ones seem to be only available with fixed ventilation.

I have come up with a way of stop freezing with these skyight on Baileys. I been out and purchased a form pipe insulation for 1/2 pipe from Wick,s. Cut to size lift up skylight and place on edge of the perpex sklight close down no draft.

ONLY DO THE ONE SKYLIGHT IN A VAN SO YOU STILL GET AIRFLOW.

Valerie..........a good designer can give you your romantic view and situation.

The skylight does not have to open if fitted over the bed. It just has to be transparent.

Ventilation can come from elsewhere in the van where it can more easily be weather protected.

Sorry for late reply just done a hard weeks sunbathing in Madeira :)
