Hi everyone,

I am looking for a good family park for this easter in Devon, either on the north coast around Combe Martyn, Ilframcombe area or on the south coast around Exmouth, Dawlish area.

Thanks

JSD

Stowford Farm meadows nr combe martin is nice. Its a huge site, but with immaculate facilites, woodland walks, pool, crazy golf, pets corner. It also has bar/takeaway....even though its big its not glitzy, I would say it was ideal for families.

If you`re in the CC or C&CC (not sure if it`s members only), have a look at Damage Barton, they have their own website and it`s the only place we use in North Devon.

First time we went to Devon we went to Stowford Farm Meadows, stopped three days, then managed to escape even though it meant forfeiting eleven nights site fees. Admittedly it was prior to their winning of any awards, but at the time you were trated like cattle, the toilets were disgusting, and the lack of water pressure meant 20 minute queues (but there was always someone else with whom to have a conversation).

Calling in at the site a couple of years ago it was obvious money had been spent on developing the site, but there was absolutely nothing which would persuade me to contemplate spending any time there. Field upon field of vans in rows looking on to each other.

As has been said so many times we are all different, and fortunately like different things ( at the same time one of my drivers was moving from Damage Barton to Stowford when we were going in the opposite direction).

Have a look at both sites. If you like one, I can`t see you liking the other, they really are `chalk and cheese`.

I think it depends whether or not you have children. We have and they loved Stowford. I won't go to over-commercialised sites and this isn't one. We've been twice and always had good sized pitches. Would recommend the 'dog' field as we haven't got a dog and found this the best field only seeing the occasional dog (on leads). Shop has everything you need, pool clean with nice changing rooms/showers etc and there's a great walk through the valley below along with a large 18 hole golf course that the adults enjoyed while the younger ones went on the crazy golf. The showers/toilets were always spotless and we went in the height of the summer.

I think the `children` thing is not really an issue.

My daughter was young when we went there, but had fun making friends with other kids on other, quieter sites. Perhaps we were fortunate that she enjoyed the company of other,like-minded kids as opposed to needing crazy golf, a pets corner or a pool.

Similarly, I wouldn`t enjoy a stay on a site that had a pool, bar, takeaway and a mini supermarket on site.

As I said before, each to his/her own. Thats part of the beauty of what we do, insomuch as we can have opposing requirements but still enjoy a common hobby.

It was a long time since we stayed, but can`t forget ( or help laughing at) the queues at the standpipe, having a (tiny) pitch marked out like a football pitch, standing at the urinals and having a female cleaner mopping around your ankles, and putting 20p in the meter for a shower and having to sprint the length of the toilet block as the showers were at the other end to the meters! I have no doubt investment has been made, but it clouded my judgement to such a degree that I wouldn`t go back.

After all, theres so many sites I love, there is no need!

Stowford wins lots of awards so there is obviously loads of people to whom this type of site really appeals. I`m not one of them, but that neither makes me right nor wrong, just of a differing opinion.
