If using your electric fire for prolonged periods ( on all day ) would it cause the electric circuit breaker to trip. The fire is a Trumatic Ultraheat which is electric and gas.

No it should be capable of operating on full electric for prolonged periods without tripping. However depending on the power supply from the site hook up or if you have anything else running it could trip out the breaker. For a rough estimate each kilowatt consumed draws 4 amps at 240 volts. So if your supply is 16 amp then you could use up to 4 kw. But when appliances first connect they can consume higher levels for a very short time but this may be sufficient to trip the breakers. An other thing that would trip the van breaker could be an electric circuit fault.

Thanks for the info other clive. It's the trip in the van that keeps tripping. I have the fridge, fire, TV and Freesat box on I will have to check the amount of watts they all use. I am using the fire on 2000 but it was still tripping on 500. It may be when the fire turns on. It lasts a while before it goes off.

You could try each item on its own running on electric with the others on gas apart from tv that is but if the tv etc was disconnected from the mains for a while you might be able to see if one particular appliance is causing the trips. If you use the heater on gas make sure of your ventilation and great if you have a CO detector. Could your water heater be on auto electric and causing trips? Just a thought.

hi Kevin, I think Clive has given the correct answer to your problem,
last year we were on a site that had a 10amp supply during a cold spell while using the heating the bollard CB kept tripping every time the kettle was put on, after about 4 times out in the rain

I switched the heating to gas. the problem dissapeared instantly,
sounds to me like a spike in consumtion when the thermostat kicks in try using gas,

Thanks for replying I took a look at the trip with my glasses on this time the trip is for the fire, fridge and sockets. I had the fire and fridge on and it tripped so its one of them. I am thinking it could be the fridge as the fire stays on a while and the frige would have to warm up a bit before it came back on in these cold conditions. Might try fridge on gas.

There's something strange happening. I think there's some kind of magnetic field which could be causing a problem. If I stand in front of the van my compass reading north is totally different to when I stand at the rear. ?
The trip in the van trips even if just the TV and Freestat box are on. Last night the TV and Sat box were just on standby the fridge was off and also the heater and it tripped. Will wait till we are back home and turn on the various units to see what happens.

Maybe the trip is faulty as if I touch it lightly it trips the other one needs a gentle push for that one to trip? Once the problem is sorted I will report back.

Hi Smith21, on your last post about the magnetic field. Well just to let you know when I stand infront or even behind the caravan to try to get a compass reading the thing goes all to ****. Standing at least three yards away and it goes right. It is caused by the metal of the caravan in my case.
Your trip switch problem, please check to see what size the trip is that is cutting out. This is because there are different sizes for the light circuit and sockets. I dont know if it a problem that has just started in your caravan or been there all the time.If for any reason the wrong trip is in place then the problem you are having will happen.
When you are home and NOT connected to mains power can you get to the wires in the fuse box and check to see that they are held in tight, meaning the screws are tight onto the wires.
Sorry I can not be of any more help.

Cheers Steward for the info on compass, when at the back of the van the compass was working ok.
I'm going to see about getting the van services so I will get the trip checked out at the same time.

Hello, I believe the didtribution breakers in the van are 10A max, therfore if you use 2.0kW for a heater, 0.13kW for the fridge, that leaves 2.4kW-2.0kW-0.13kW=0.27kW for anything else you plug in. You will also find that you need to "over load" the breaker for some time before it wil trip if you are just over it's rated A. Hope you find a solution to your problem!
