Electrolux in 1991 Elddis problems

Hi

We have a 1991 Elddis. The fridge is an Electrolux RM212 that suddenly stopped working. The pilot stays alight but the fridge does not chill. It started this weekend. I was running it from the gas bottle. Everything was ok on Saturday then I turned it down on the Sunday from No3 to No2. It was not working by the evening. The pilot was still on though as you could see it through the inspection glass. I tried re-lighting it and the pilot cam on but after an hour still working as the ice compartment was not cold. I have also noticed that I have to hold the dial in for a good minute, for the pilot light to stay on.

Anybody have any idea what maybe happening and what I can do to fix it? I was told that the caravan was serviced a year ago.

regards

Alan

Hi Alan

As the last service was a year ago it may need another service. Have you chcked the flue is clear? The gas jet itself can block up overtime and may need cleaning / replacing. Obviously as it's gas youshould consult an expert tc.

Cheers

Hello Alan,

You need to establish if the fridge has lost the refrigerant fluid. To do this check if the fridge works on 230Vac. If it does work on mains, then the problem will be with the burner/flue.

If it does not work on mains power, then it is probable the coolant circuit has lost its fluid. Depending on where the leak is it may be possible to get it repaired. This is definately a job for a specialist.

If any of teh gas couplings and joints need to be dismantled to get teh fridge out it must be done by a competent person working to the gas regulatoins.

All these type fridges use Ammonia, not the domestic cleaning stuff so if it is leaking while it's switched on you will know about it, the smell is toxic!

If you can smell it though there is no repair, it's scrap.

The 212 though is quite reliable so it's more likely to be something else. I did one recently whose flame appeared ok but would not cool down, problem was simply a lack of proper service, nothing particularly wrong just a collection of several small errors.

If a fridge does not work on gas or electric, the usual advice is to take it out and turn upside down and back again several times, waiting say 20 seconds between turns.

However I've just heard that there's a simpler way to obtain the same result, this comes, (not directly), from a long retired Electrolux rep.

Using electric but gas if you want, the trick is to turn on for an hour then off for an hour, repeating three times before leaving on.

This should get it working again the same as spinning it?
