Can these cylinders still be refilled? (6kg propane) Having searched the web it appears they were bought out by Calor unless the info was wrong. Can't seem to find a supplier locally which makes me wonder. The cylinder must be well over a decade old. TIA

edit: slightly got that wrong. The empty one is a Calor one that I intend to replace with a Calor lite one but the Eurogas one has just had a weeks usage on my drive so it is not empty yet.

Hello PMB,
I cant tell whether of not Eurogas cylinders can be refilled or not, But I can tell you that at 10Years old, the cylinder is due for safety checking. This is one aspect of bottle ownership that often gets forgotten. This is one of the benefits of renting/exchange as the company has that responsibility.

Fair point Prof. Also why don't Calor do a butane lite cylinder or have things moved on to propane only since I last caravanned? (ie before high pressure hoses)

Calor only brought out the Lite cylinder to satisfy the leisure market and the need to reduce weight in caravans.

As most people use Propane as it is an all year use gas , as opposed to Butane only being useful in warmer weather, it was thought that a Butane Lite would not recoup the cost of setting up.

I cant be sure on this as I was talking to a fellow caravanner yesterday and it seems the place to go for the lighter bottles is Homebase now I was told they had bought out one of the companys. and I got confused with Gas light Calor Lite and BP I gave up but yes Homebase .

Thanks for the responses. After much searching Eurogas were bought out by Calor and I did find one person that had exchanged a Eurogas cylinder for a Calor one last year but it had to be at a depot. BP sold their bottles to macgas from what I read. Can't see any cylinders at Homebase. It's not a major problem as I have an empty 6kg Calor propane that I will be exchanging for a Calor gas lite (maybe tomorrow) and a full 7kg Calor butane. If I can exchange the Eurogas one when it is empty I will but there was no deposit so it will be down to the tip if I can't.

If you do end up taking your cylinders to the tip, Do not put them in general or metal rubbish, the tip should have cage for gas cylinders

Yes Prof , I've actually been to the tip twice this week and they have a cage with a surprisingly high number of gas cylinders in there.

Hi PMB and other poster on this topic .I have done a search as I said in an earlier thread I was told about a buy out by Homebase not sure who how and what but looking at Homebase its Gas light Propane. The first Payment will be £67.99 for a 10kg bottle and £60.99 for a 5 kg bottle of course exchange is cheaper but at the moment I dont have that figure and sadly I wont be around for a week to check but Yes Gaslight Homebase .

Went to gooutdoors the other day to replace a 6kg steel propane for a gaslite one but they don't do them unlike what it says on their website. Looking at the reviews people have bought them from there in the past so would be interested to know if your local gooutdoors stocks them. Didn't realise until I looked on the calor site that not all of their stockists have the gaslite ones either.

For those looking for an alternative light weight propane gas solution, and IMO a "better" one, in size, weight and definitely availability:

According to their website its another Homebase 15% off weekend.

For those wishing to start with Macgas [ex BP] Gaslights or get an exchange; the offer has previously worked on both the rental and gas charges.

10kg option, bottle rental and gas, price here ex discount:

You will need one of these 27 mm clip on adaptors if also needing to be able to use French Le Cubes:

or if only a Gaslight user one of these:

Where is the proof of your statement that most people use propane rather than butane.I use both gases but mostly butane as it has a higher calorific value - in other words it gives off more heat than propane.

Hello Bertie,

The LPG industry produces more Propane than Butane, so on the whole LPG market more people use Propane than Butane. Butane is almost exclusively only used in the leisure market, but with more people caravanning in winter when temperatures are low, Butane can quite easily stop boiling off where as Propane will still work very effectively down to about -40C. so more people are switching to propane.

Butane does have a higher calorific value than Propane, but its not massively different and for most consumers they will be barely able to tell the difference, especially where the appliance is thermostatically controlled.

Commercially Butane supplies are often substantially more expensive than the equivalent weight of Propane, and using propane exposes customers to a greater number of suppliers, where as Butane is almost exclusively distributed by one supplier, and they tend to charge a premium price for it.

That's interesting Malcolm as my local branch Wakefield does not do them (and for anyone not good at geography it is not far from Doncaster) The assistant said straightaway that they didn't stock the Calor Lite bottles and looking at the wall board where you take a tag to the till to exchange a gas bottle there were none for the calor lite bottles. Strange company policy if only some of them stock them. The Calor website could be more helpful as it doesn't seem to list gooutdoors at all. (unless you know different)

Its not unknown to find that some branches of a retailer do not stock all the items that other branches stock. I'm not specifically referring to Calor Lite bottle or Go Outdoors its an issue that affects a wide variety of shops and products.

Often its down to the physical size of the store, but it can also be down to the licence to sell petro-chemical substances - some sites may not have the necessary space for safety cages required for the retail and storage of gas cylinders to meet health and Safety requirements.

Other factors may play a part, there could be local history of poor sales at a particular store, which companies may flag up as not being cost effective. Or the local manager may have opted out of selling them.

It could also be the one shop mentioned with stock may simply be the last one and is selling untill stock is exhausted and not reordering

with the calor lite I went to the Doncaster store about four week ago and they had none now it seems they are stocking them. when I emailed go out doors they said they would not stock them supply issues that was a month ago. maybe each store can do as they like re stock The last one I had before this I purchased from Wakefield no store in Doncaster then and they change a heavy weight for a lite, but that was last may before we went to France. and did we use some gas it was the coldest wettest may over there that they can remember malc

Hi,
I hope I am not hijacking this thread but it is a good topic and seems to lead onto-
What brands of cylinder can be refilled in the UK and especially in France and Spain?
