Excess speed.

Just had a phonecall from daughter. Some (insert your own expletive) speeding through her village hit my 4 yr old grandsons kitten so hard, it threw it across the road, over the full length of her garden into her own parked car with such force its barely recognizable as the body of a cat. Its smeared all over her car front. He opened his curtains this morning to be greeted by that sight. He is absolutely inconsolable. That road terrifies me and should have speed bumps, but the council wont do anything until somebody is killed. At the other end, it becomes a winding hill where you cannot do more than 30mph weaving in and out of the parked cars. There it has speed bumps. There is no logic to anything a council does.

Sadly we have the same issue in our small village especially at the moment as one of the main roads into Worcester is closed and the road is being used as a rat run. I have had a few narrow misses with cars coming around blind bends and cutting the bend causing you to take evasive action. The road has high hedges on either side. We are worried about our two cats. Also there are a number of young children in the village which has less then 100 homes.

Appalling. So sorry. The driving out there just gets worse imo. Speed yes but many simply just aren't looking where they're going or concentrating on driving at all. I work on the roads and see bear misses every day. Yesterday an idiot on a motorbike creotvup the inside of a queue . Car driver moves off with him within mm! Drinking alcohol behind the wheel phones and TV are others I've seen recently. Far too few police and far too reliant on cameras.

We also suffer with idiots who speed . There is a pedestrian crossing for the school children and a turning off the main road which are approximate 200 m apart. Why oh why do the certain types of people open their throttles / peddles as if they are in F1.

I have experienced the same situation and can empathise with you,:)

A very sad day Thingy. We are 20 mph all over town yet a few weeks ago this idiot had to be cut out. He drove down our High Street at possibly 60 mph, speed at impact thought 40 +, On his phone having passed his test the week before!55F8D508-C362-424D-9505-F4483A668ECA.jpegD6BA984A-A503-4C44-8803-2227A0247AD0.jpeg

Looking at that impact damage, I would think he was doing far more than 40. Perhaps its time dashcams were compulsory as they tell the tale of speed with time and location.

He’s lucky the fire didn’t spread beyond the engine bay. But otherwise a total idiot. Wonder what the penalty will be. Interesting to hear the follow up.

If you look closely the impact fractured an 8 inch tree trunk. Note the force was so great the Skoda’s stub axle was sheared off. Maybe the Prof will have an idea of the force required to do that!

One of the worst things to hit is a tree. Incredibly unforgiving. I would rather hit a lamp standard than a tree, not that I have any intention of hitting anything.

They were actually lucky that the tree was uprooted. In my experience in a former working life trees rarely moved and the results were often much worse. It’s surprising the amount of damage a small sapling will do.

In relative terms, it looks like a fair bit of speed was taken out by the lamppost and wall before it hit the tree?

Excess speed isn't confined to rural villages, urban areas also have idiot drivers.
An inquest has been held in the West Midlands recently on four young people who were killed when an unlicensed uninsured moron thought it would be a good idea to drive a Skoda Fabia with two under inflated tyres through a council estate at 96mph last October.
The driver, who shares the same surname as me but is no relation, was known for his reckless behaviour on motorcycles and in cars on local roads, killed himself, three of his friends and he left another with serious injuries after the Skoda hit a tree when he lost control of the car.

I'll guess - more than 1NM!

I have previously called drivers who knowingly or habitually drive too fast as idiots - and my comment was removed, but I still hold that view.

Lamp-posts are designed to break when hit by a vehicle - unlike trees which are remarkably resilient.

Is that less than one lb foot? Don’t really understand the SI units. I’ ve seen some shear forces measured in tons force.

You only have to walk around various retails parks etc to see (sometimes) 30 or more of those silver gas cannisters and deflated balloons strewn around.
To think, they drive to the locations, have "their fill"on the gas, then drive off in their car to wherever.
Surely their driving ability must be impaired.

Don't worry, they soon won't be able to drive like that.

Google EU regulation 2019/2044 (which was issued in 2019 before Brexit so we have agreed to comply) which enforces fitment of all sorts of bells and whistles to new vehicles from 6th July 2022. There is a lot on Google under such as Autocar and the newspapers, or I have put a piece about be scared out of your skin (that's the polite version!) on another caravan forum. (I hope that is not sinful Parksy?)

Couldn’t you just duplicate the “ piece” on this Forum. What is it that will scare us out of our skin? Even legislation carried over from our membership of the EU can be repealed or modified by another Act of Parliament, modification to an Act or such things as Statutory Instruments. However in reality deciding to divert from technology going into cars for mainstream markets like Europe and USA would probably lead to prices rising given the need for manufacturers to design and build for UK. It could also disadvantage those car makers based in this country. Like it or not we will have to continue keeping abreast of technology legislation and developments. It’s what we’ve been doing for years anyway.

lb ft is torque. 🏕
Getting there Clive👍
In English system of measurements, a slug is the amount of mass that 1 pound of force will accelerate at 1 ft/s2, and a pound mass is the amount of mass that 1 LB of force will accelerate at 32 feet/s2. Which equates to the Prof’s figure. So out of idle curiosity I wonder how many NM were needed to shear the stub axle. Saddo🤪🤪
