Explanation of MAW and CAP

Hello all

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but heregoes.

I've got a 1999 Fleetwood Colchester 1650.

The plate on the side says

MAW 1340kg

CAP 260kg.

I have not really bothered with these as I tow with a Range Rover and little weight in the caravan.

I would just like to have a simple explanation.

steve the simple explanation is that the MAW is the Maximum Allowable Weight, that is the all up weight of the van plus it's contents and is equivalent to the more modern term MPTLM.

The CAP is the allowance for contents which means your van has got a unloaded ex factory weight of 1080kg.

Steve, Caravan Allowable Payload (CAP)

The amount of weight permitted by the caravan manufacturer as the payload of the caravan.

This includes the gas bottles, steps, spare tyres, bedding, crocks and cutlery, bedding, clothes, water, food and everything else not built in by the manufacturer.
