Hi klarky

interested in your post that the vectra deisel only needs servicing every 20k, I know you can leave a deisel for a few more miles but I was told that if towing you should get it serviced more regularly than usual, say every eight months or 10k whichever first !! Are they havin me on do you think ??Also could you settle a debate for me, I;m sure I read that you can get your car serviced anywhere when under warranty as long as they use genuine parts and that you dont have to go back to the dealer who sold you the car !! What do you think?(sorry I know it's a caravan forum but while were on the subject!!)

I would take that with a pinch of salt. I don't even let my daughter's 12K HDI diesel go the full distance before it gets an oil and filter change. I belong to two forums whose members are either professional mechanics or keen DIYers. The general opinion is that extended service intervals are nothing more than a sop for fleet managers. They don't need to have any interest in the vehicle after three years use.

the vectra diesel has a service period of 1 year or 20000 mls or 2yrs 40,000 mls and so on whichever comes first,if you service the vehicle as per the above the warranty of your car is coverd.if an individual wishes to service it more regular(which i did oil and filter every 10000 mls or six month whichever came first as i have always loked after the car ive had and i did this myself not the garage)its entirely their choice but you need not do this if you do not want to as long as you adhere to their guidline its ok.just because you tow you must service it more regulary i dont think so,once again its up to you,the manufacturer states its towing capabilities and nowhere in the handbook does it state YOU MUST SERVICE MORE OFTEN IF YOU TOW.

as far as servicing by the dealer,or anybody else as long as they fit vauxhall parts,im sorry but that is not the case.

whatever car you have i would advise to ask the manufacturer their policies on servicing and i bet most of them come up with the same answer, ive got a terrano and i cant just go to anyone as long as they fit nissan parts 'FACT '.THEY MUST BE A NISSAN APPROVED DEALER,AND VAUXHALL WILL TELL YOU THE SAME.you cant go to a back st garage who may well fit vauxhall parts to service the car,for when you go back to the vauxhall dealer when something goes wrong with your car and he looks at the WARRANTY BOOKLET just see what they say, youve got no chance.this they a very strict on.im not saying all manufacturers are like this but i bet the majority are

hi tina

have read you warranty and as i said ,you must use an authorised kia dealer,if theres a one in your area you might be able to use them, but ask,as some dealers are like caravan dealers,if you dont buy the car from them they sometimes dont want to know.ive got same problem with caravan, got it fron glossop caravans and have to take it back to them,300ml round trip ughhh

thats entirely up to you,and how you feel about it,its all about personal choice, its not mandatory for you to do this as i explained,if you dont its not going to void your warranty.

ps im not in the know, just a hard working law abiding citizen like most, whos willing to listen ,learn, and take advice when need to

favourite saying 'its nice to be nice,if you can't be nice don't be nasty

hope you solve your dilemna-ive always took it back to the place ive bought it from-less hassle

To be safe do as Klarky says. However, though I do not know how it will pan out, the law in relation to servicing and warranties is changing. I think you will find that any pukka garage will be able service any vehicle and undertake warranty work. The Dti recognises that car rerailers can hold their buyers to ransom by insisting that only their dealers can fix them.

One further observation. Have you noticed that subsequent years in a particular model range seem to get longer and longer service intervals - is that fine tuning?

Yet another observation. Apart from changing oil and filter/s what do garages actually do to a car in the first two/three years? - a long list of checks you can't confirm. Rip off or what?

Despite the fact that we are now in the age of synthetic oils with very long lifspans it is always a good idea to change oil and filter more regulalry than the manufactuter suggests (use their oil and filter - warranty don't forget). Safety issues aside the lifespan of a car is limited mainly by how frequently you change oil and filter rather than any other apsect of maintenance.
