Hi max, before you decide to give up entirely on being helpful can you answer me this. It is nothing to do with towing sockets or even towing, but methinks you are the man to ask. I have a little car and the switch that controls the headlamp height (you know, the one with about 3 settings) has a mind of its own and the headlamps frequently go up and down at will. In one of my remonstrations with the bloke in the garage who has thus far failed to solve the problem (long story) I pointed out this would cause the car to fail its MOT! He thought not. Anyway, you seem to know your stuff, what do you think.
Thanks
mel

right the answer to this question is solely from the point of view of a tester, when conducting an mot u test the car however it is presented by the customer and what the car is like at the time of test, so if your car came to me and the headlight aim was in spec and didnt fluctuate then i would pass the car, if the headlights were in spec and then the aim fluctuated in height every now and again then i would probably pass and advise on a problem with the height control, but i would need to refer to the testing manual to be full certain on this as ive never come across this problem during the 6 yrs of testing, hope this helps

Thanks max it does. Fortunately car is less than 3 years old and so hopefully it will be sorted by the time it needs an mot (although the way things are going I am less than confident!). However every bit of ammunition I have for my interesting debates with garage bloke is much appreciated.
cheers

if its less than 3 yrs old it should be covered in the warrenty, but if you need mot advice to throw back at garages i can quote you page reference numbers out of the mot testing manual, ive been mot testing 6 yrs now in the garage trade around 17 yrs,

Thanks max. I'll bear that in mind if I need it. So far it is covered by warranty and there is no debate about the need to fix it. The debate is about the priority and the need for garage bloke to lean on the manufacturer for the part rather more heavily than appears to currently be the case.
