Saturday last, in view of exceptional weather, we decided to spend the weekend at our favourite 'local' site. Rang them at 11.30am and yes they could fit us in. Taking the locks off an hour or so later and by chance spotted that the van kitchen window was cracked through both layers. Stuck some duck tape over it and went off for our weekend. Rang the insurers monday morning and also the dealers that we pass on our way home who agreed to have a look at it as we were passing. Needs a new window...anything up to a 12 week wait!

Got home and asked our Mobile repairman to have a look, he can get the perspex part ( no need for the whole cassette to be replaced) but minimum time for his order to arrive is 4 weeks. We have a ferry booked, taking us to France in 3 weeks :(

Looks like we might have to cancel :((

Why cancel? The tape may look a bit crude so how about replacing it with clear Fablon type stuff? You can get it in frosted effect, even lacy if that floats your boat.

I ran for 10 months with one of my windows duck taped.

Recommendation: Buy the clear version. eg. http://www.wilkinsonplus.com/Carpet-Accessories/Henkel-Power-Duck-Tape-Virtually-Clear-50mm-x-20m/invt/0208449

Wow, thanks everybody. It's just we were worried about the cracks getting longer and the whole window sort of collapsing and being miles from home. You have given me new hope. Now i can use the :)

hi again Mags and Alan how about covering the window with cling film

This will cover the crack and would be harder to see.

How are you getting on with satellite ????

Have just had to sort my cable out as I run the same system at homeI have a joiner in mine and had the same trouble you had so I had to cut back the cable the cable to get past the corrosion and hey presto perfect picture again ...Good Luck Sir Roger

Hi Sir Roger. Sorry, i haven't had the chance to play with the satellite yet with one thing and another, we didn't bother taking the tv with us at the weekend which in hindsight would have been a good time to, trying to make it work would have given me something to do instead of lazing around in the sun all day lol I will give you a shout when i've checked the lnb and connections.

find your nearest radio control model shop.pop in and ask for some foam friendy cyano and kicker.

You want the very thin type.

Now then ,this is where it gets fun.

Get a drill, maybe 3.0mm dia and drill as small hole at the highest point of the crack.

Wick the cyano into the crack than spray on the kicker. The cyano will go off before it leaks out of the crack and you may not even notice the crack after the cyan has set.

If some of the cyano does leak out and run down the window, let,it dry then get some of the wife's nail polish remover , wet some paper towel with it and start to gently rub the dried cyano off the window.

Fill the 3.0mm dia hole with a bit of pure car windscreen sealer and let it dry.( you can use the wife's nail polish remover again if you smear the silicon everywhere).

oh yeas,if you are very careful and you have a soldering iron, you could "weld" the crack. Its not easy and takes a little patience but it can be don, simply by running the soldering iron tip along the crack...slowly,but not too slowly to melt right through the window.

Hi Phil. All sounds very erm.. complicated. The cracks are right through both layers of the window, they're not just deep scratches, does this make any difference to either of yout mending options?

the cyano will penetrate both leaves of plastic, the soldertig iron will just melt the surface.

i would go for the glue method.
