Why not post under topic of "Mer"?

Issues with Mer? Like it as a polish but not as a cleaner. Plus you need to buff it off when it dries. Does leave a good skin on the paintwork though

Hi Guys ,Im sorry to be a stick in the mud here but have bad experience with Mer,in as much I found it too harsh but each to their own as they say .

Now as exspesive as it is I am now using Auto Glym.

Another thing I have found is some really cheap car shampoo in Asda that does fetch out all the black streaks and the green crap the sits in the awning channel its excellent at 75 pence a bottle ,Ive washed down leathered and a polish with auto glym with wonderful results

I hope this helps . Sir Roger

Hi,

This seems to be an ongoing battle for me. I have tried Mer, Fenwicks and others but still struggle to get rid of the black streaks on the back panel of my Abbey. Is anyone aware of any other products that could be useful here?

I put some of my Fenwicks (say 50/50 with water)into a spray bottle so that I can spray it onto an area of black streaks, after leaving for 30 secs or so and wiping off with a damp cloth the streaks come away very easily. Go ver the area with a good polish afterwards and all is restored as new.

Also, I have also used white spirit to clean marks off including the odd grease mark (after a service etc.) Works like magic and the polish then protects the surface from the elements. Howver, I always feel that the sun seems to do more damage to the ABS plastic panels than anything and there's not a straightforward of correcting it once the surface has been damaged (or is there ?)

Hi Paul

Following a forum debate about caravan shampoo and exterior cleaning Dustydog who owns a Bailey Pageant Vendee and who regularly contributes information to forum members kindly sent an email to me.

This contained a reply to him from Kelly Watts of Baileys which I will partly reproduce here with Dustydog's pemission:

5.1 GENERAL MAINTENANCE

5.1.1 Exterior

The exterior of your caravan is very durable and easy to clean owing to its high gloss properties. To maintain a showroom finish one needs only to wash the caravan regularly with a car shampoo, rinse with cold water and chamois leather off. Do not forget to clean the roof. A good quality non metallic and non-coloured car wax that does not contain white spirit may be applied, which will make washing easier.

▲ Under no circumstances use any abrasive agents, methylated spirit, white spirit, other solvents, washing up liquid or fluid with a high aromatic or citrus content, to the exterior of your caravan.

----------------------------------------------------------------

The advice given is not to use white spirit to clean off marks from the exterior of your caravan.

Thank you for your very helpful advice. I do reaalise the damage that abrasives and white spririt etc could do, I really look after and love my van (Elldis Odyssey) and would never use liberal amounts of anything harmful. Occasionally, one does get the odd mark/spot which is very stubborn and a little bit of something like a dab of white spirit on a clean cloth/tissue has never done my paintwork or ABS any harm. As I said I always recoat with a good polish afterwards. I'm probably wrong but its only on there for a few seconds. The gooey residue which leaches out of mastic when its been in the sun is impossible to shift with any shampoo and so a quick wipe with white spirit soon removes it.

Rob oh Rob don't take on so, you will get the results you want and rightly so if you STOP POLISHING and use Bobby Dazzler as recommended by pratical caravan/motorhome this is of course 2005 BC. You will never stop the air polution and carbon deposits but you will be able to wipe off the black streaks with ease if you don't fix them with polish, and just remember it's the F-IN-FENWICKS (formula) that really matters Cheers James Roger

ive never heard of care-avan so i can not coment on its abilities.

ive said loads of times now that fenwicks is the best shampoo ive found for the van, we allso use it 50 / 50 in a spray to remove stuborn black streaks and find once soaked for 30 seconds they simply wipe off.

for the past 6 years ive used nothing but auto glym products to polish my vans and cars, they are superb and very easy to use, the trick i have is i subscribe to various magazines over the year that are giving away the auto glym polishing kit, ive now got 7 of these kits 4 of which are still un opened. i get magazines to read and ive not paid for any polish for about 5 years now.

Hi Icemaker,

Could not agree more, Fenwicks is superb and agree about the 50/50 mix. I also use Autoglym and its great, maybe a little too much powder residue, but I think that could be down to me putting on too much at times. Have you tried using Turtle Wax original after the other two. It leaves a great smooth finish and keeps the ease of cleaning the van to a minimum at the end of the season. Only problem is wax on, wax off, wax on, wax off, Karate Kid Where are you. There again you get the finish you want when you put the work in.

Thanks Rob

As far as saying it was the staff of care-avan,I didn't I am just sick of persons insinuation that Fenwicks causes problems. If it does get them to prove it or leave it alone.

I don't work for or have any connection with Fenwicks in any way or form, but I know a great product when I use it.

Mer is an excellent polish but you can only do a panel at a time and also it is very dusty,Try using autoglym polish you can do all the caravan or car and it is not dusty
