has any one out there had any problems with this car

the car is a 51 reg and despite servicing every 10 thousand miles as soon as the warranty was up the problems started

so far: gearbox and clutch

2 lots of handbrake cables

2 electric wing mirrors

oil leak no 1

wishbone bushes

2 broken doorhandles

broken seat levers

front springs

fault on the glow plugs

3 new drop links on the front

the car now need a new anti roll bar on the front and it has a

oilleak from near the turbo which will probaly result in having

to have the turbo reconditoned. the car has only done 59500 miles less than 5 of these have been towing a light caravan

this is not including the numerous repairs done under warranty.

Andrea,

That's quite some list and by now I'll guess you'll probably on your third dealer?? All of which have no diagnostic abilities/customer service.

Fundamentally Fiats business model is to produce a car a cheap as possible (you would think this is the same of all makers but it's not really the case for reasons explained later ) so if you imagine a car is 10K retail then you have to factor in the following

1. Production costs

2. Research and development costs (sometime shared with gullible partners)

3. Shipping costs to the UK

4. Storage costs in the UK

5. Dealer margin - here it gets interesting if you have a second division make you'll have to up the margin in order for a dealer to take on a franchise and risk selling your cars. (The two biggest retail dealership failures Reg Vardy and DC Cook both were heavily into Fiat)

6. Warranty costs - if you've done it right in the first place and your suppliers equally have built the bits right these should be low

7. Finance support - In order to get people to buy cars makers offer 0% schemes or very low rates over long periods - these cost money.

Oh and some profit margin for yourself would be nice.

The thing FIAT SPA is in a right old mess it hasn't got enough money to meet it obligations, it's workers feel that the company owes them a living and so you end up with de-motivated workforce and cars that don't cut the mustard.

Me and my family have had 4 Fiats - only one was any good and that was built in Poland !!

You could say your was built on a Friday but I thing that would be wishful.

so much of your response monkey, i would agree with.

but your are incorrect on fiat being on the rocks.

the last 6 months have shown a profit,a good one at that,

and no this does not take into account the money GM had to

pay them.

having looked at the list of problems that the members

multipa has had, then i'd have to say the suspension incidents

are normal, the car is 5 years olds and rubber perishes.

ALL fiats are hard on their suspension, but then its set up

slightly harder than most normal family cars.

turbo problem, alas its german, the same as that fitted to audi

vw group and would presume bmw as well, so it can be no better

or worse than there systems, unless that is garrett have different production lines for turbos fitted to italian cars?

gearbox and clutch problem? yes 60k is indeed short for this

type of problem, and they used the same gearbox atleast on there

140 and 150 bhp models that have 225 ft/lb of torque, and they

are not known to be problems!

but what is known to be a problem is the quality of the rads.

and it would appear you would be needing to replace this part

soon. sign will be running hotter than was the norm, no loss

of water and u do get plenty of warning....
