If you look up some of the threads of late on Italy,you will se plenty of options for routes,as florence is on the A1, then the shortests is straight through switzerland and down the side of milan. the Viamichelin site is pretty good for route info.

As for aires to stop at, depends how far you think you can get on you first day on the continent. be nice if you could make switzerland [just after basle] always feel safe there..

was thinking of stopping twice, on route but may go for the one stop where you suggest.
