To those of you not familiar with Joe Arpaio, he is the Maricopa Arizona County Sheriff and he keeps getting elected over and over.

Here are the reasons why:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio created the 'Tent City' Jail in Arizona.

He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. He took away their weights and cut off all but 'G' movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.

Then he started chain gangs for Women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a Federal Court Order that required Cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again but only let in The Disney Channel and The Weather Channel.

When asked why the weather channel he replied, "so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my Chain Gangs".

He cut off coffee because he was sick of them throwing it over each other. When the inmates complained, he told them, 'This isn't The Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back.'

He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

More on the Arizona Sheriff:

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix(116 degrees just set a new record), the associated press reports:

About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa county jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before.

Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks. 'It feels like we are in a furnace', said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the tents for 1 year. 'It's inhumane.'

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. He said that he told all of the inmates: 'it's 120 degrees in Iraq, our soldiers are living in tents too and they have to wear full battle gear but they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!'

Maybe if all prisons were like this one, there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders.

Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

Way to go Sheriff!!

I take it you're not a member of the Prison Reform Trust then?

As in theory any of use can ultimatly end up in prison for non-payment of fines I'll make sure I close the lid on my wheely bin when I put it out on monday. Pink doesn't suit me.

That`s the way to do it. I was watching a programme about the police a few days ago. They stopped an unlicenced driver, who just happened to have just got out of prison and was on licence. When told he was going back inside, he just commented that it wasn`t too bad, as when he was in Walton Prison, he had TV, radio, and even his own key to his cell, and was looking forward to seeing his mates. No wonder prison doesn`t work, it`s more like a social club for the inmates.

Here lies the problem. The lawyers will never allow it. they make too much money out of crime. If a criminal can't / doesn't want to commit crime he is of no use to the lawyers so they'll look after them as much as they can get away with.

And what background do the majority of MPs come from? Yep, the legal background! So we really haven't got a hope. Lawyers are law makers and have the whole cosy empire stitched up.

Sorry but that's the way it is.

The "secure unit" at a local psychiatric hospital houses the criminal insane overspill from Rampton and Broadmoar. They have individual "rooms" each with a state of the art laser TV, dvd recorder, laptop computers, games consols, etc. They each receive a minimum of

Can someone write to this sherrif and see if he wants a new job at 10 Downing st.

Thought it ironic during the week to see the stories in the newspapers about the Russian Jails that any potential football hooligan could end up in.

Funny didn't see too much rioting there.

Whether jail punishment is appropriate or not is debatable, but there is little proof that the practice described has a deterrent effect. If it were, there should be no new inmates in Sheriff Arpaio's jail. Sounds more like vengeance than punishment to me.

It all stems from birth and the nanny state, being governed by politically correct leftist nincompoops.

It's now illegal to smack your child. Teachers and the police aren't allowed to touch unruly kids. The courts are toothless. Leftwing social workers still try the failed softly softly approach with criminals and the probation service is a costly quango with pathetic results.

ASBOS, house arrests, suspended jail sentences, community service etc. have all been proven to be a failure and wet behind the ears do-gooders, like the Prison Reform Trust who are partly answerable for our dire problems, are still trying to make life easier for those who are unfortunate or unlucky enough to be jailed today.

Recently on the television news a prisoner told Jack Straw that prison was like a holiday camp. All Straw could do was laugh and say to a colleague, "did you hear what he said, he said it's like a holiday camp".

Even having it straight from the horses mouth is way over Straws head. Recently they have let out on bail two people charged with murder, one of them a policeman. Both have gone on to kill again while on bail. Where was the protection for their victims? These politically correct jerks don't give a fig about victims, they must have a guilt ridden conscience themselves and by trying to save the sins of the scum of the land feel that it might atone for their own sins.

We have tried the soft option for far too long and it's gone far enough.

IT DOES NOT WORK.

More thought MUST be given to the victims and less thought to the welfare of those who don't give a damn about others. As far as I'm concerned they can rot in hell and the sooner the better so our streets are safe to walk once again.

If I've offended the couple of PC ideologists that use this forum then TOUGH, get over it.

Sheriff Joe instituted pink underwear because the inmates were stealing the regular underwear. They don't steal the pinks. Their outer clothes are prison stripes. They can't hide wearing those.

Sheriff Joe is a former federal drug enforcement agent. He has had to deal with a lot of riff-raff not only here in the states, but overseas as well.
