Could someone help me as I have been told 2 differant things about towing with this car.

My car is 1.6 and the hand book says it KBW is 1144kg, I have been told I can tow upto this weight but I have also been told that the Max is 85% which is 900kg. The hand book makes no comments about towing. I am at the moment towing a trailer tent but we are looking to get a caravan in the next 4/6 months. So any help would be greatfull.

I've got a 1.4 tdci, which I once used to tow a car transporter trailer, but I wouldn't fancy having a caravan on the back.

I afraid that you have been a victim of the 85% brigade. In law the car us allowed to tow up to the maximum tow weight figure the manufacture specifies for that specific model. My sources suggest that the Ford fusion with the 1.6 has a maximum tow weight allowance of only 900Kg this is a figure set by the manufacture and is is less than the kerb weight of the car

The 85% figure is only guideline and has no basis in law. In the case of the fusion it is irrelevant anyway as the manufacture has set a figure that is below the 85% guideline.

My source is from a third party site, It is known that sonme of the data on all such sites is erroneous the problem is you don't know which is right or wrong, so you must always check the figures with the VIN plate or relevant handbook for the model. Alternatively seek confirmation from the manufacture.

I'm afraid you are a victim of the anti 85% recommendation brigade.

John L is a regular critic of this recommendation set by the Caravan Club.

The club set this figure after much debate. And although i have been towing for about 20 years, i still work to it.

You should regard 3rd party posts with caution.
