This is a 1997 model. Does anyone have any experience on this car - or dare I say 4 x 4. Grateful for any responses/help. Thanks

Hi Janet,

You don't say whether you have one or are thinking of geting one but I did have a 99 Terrano Auto (same car, different badge) and used it for about 50K miles. Didn't like it and wouldn't get another.

Basically it's a soft roader not a fully capaple offroader in spite of low ratio ect, has vague steering, poor fuel economy cramped loadspace, wears front tyres out and is too tall and narrow for it's wheel base. Mine had an annoying fault which made it hunt at Idle and turned low speed tractability into a nause. Never towed with it but in retrospect think it would have been a bit iffy - much better 4x4's out there, like Trooper,Shogun, Landcruiser, Fronterra and LR.

Sorry but you did ask.

Brilliant towcar,we're on our second ,tows a 1650 twin axle with no problems.Don't agree with the soft roader comment.Look for a TD intercooler(round headlights) as they have more power. They are built to last as the amount of P,R,S&T reg Mavericks and Terranos around in good condition proves.

Thanks for the comments, the one I'm looking at is a 1997 (P) reg. 2.7TD GLS, 7 seater. 97,000 miles on the clock, already has towbar, looks in great conditions, has round headlights. The insurance group is 10 (not too bad), but the emissions are quite high - am quite concerned about fuel consumption, as have been driving a company car (Mazda 6 TS Diesel 2.0) recently and that was quite good. Now the company car is gone, we have to buy our own car and hence cannot afford more than

Its a good vehicle for the price. The fuel may be a little heavy but not too bad. because they are popular there should be parts available easily and at good cost.

As for the ability to tow, many people use them and they seem to do the job well. lots of space and easy to drive.

Janet,my wife (5 feet tall)uses ours everyday around the streets of North London with no problems. Mavericks are quite narrow so fit into parking spots easily. At 90K miles a lot of owners mistakenly change the clutch because of fluid loss. The culprit is a rubber pipe going into the side of the gearbox which perish around this milage(cost of part

Janet - whilst the Insurance Grouping is higher, it does not always follow that it is more expensive. Try the NFU for at renewal or a specialist broker like Adrian Flux.

Also as Tony points out - things like tyres are far cheaper and as they are larger diameter last longer as well.

I also agree 100% with his suggestion of regular oil changes (and filter!) changes at 3000 miles. NOTHING helps more to keep an engine running well.

Thanks for your replies. Managed to get cheaper insurance at the AA, have joined Mayday and have towed once over the weekend. So far, so good, love it up to now. The big test will be the trip to Scotland in 3 weeks time for Easter!
