Hi

After buying a Ford Galaxy 1.9tdi and towing (Swift Coastline 590 =1500kg)found it to be very sluggish on hills - down to first gear on steep gradients. On the flat cruised nicely at 60mph but not much more to overtake those annoying slow moving lorries !! I am thinking of trying to chip the engine and gain some more horsepower, has anybody any experience / views on the above.

Regards

Neil

Neil, we have a 1.9tdi Galaxy (110 hp), we used to find it sluggish when we first started to tow our caravan and over time it gradually got worse, on further investigation by our mechanic it was found to be a faulty air flow sensor. Now have no problems towing a Bailey Bretange (1405kgs) Our mechanic told us that this is quite a common problem with this engine and they see it quite reguarly. If you have this problem shop around, the Ford dealer would have charged us about

I have a SEAT Alhambra with the VW 1.9tdi 130bhp engine and have just come back from a trip to Spain towing a Swift Challenger gross wt 1300kg. We didn't have a problem with sluggishness - in fact it went like a train - stayed mostly in 5th and on hills 4th (didn't use 6th as the revs would be too low). I used to have a Peugeot 406 2.0 hdi 110bhp and had it chipped. It improved the towing a lot and was nearly as good as the Alhambra. I may have the Alhambra chipped but not yet (possible warranty problem). I spoke to Van Aaken who fitted the chip to the Peugeot and they said they have a car with a VW 1.9 tdi 130 bhp and with a chip it produces 160 bhp! You could call them. Hope this is of some use. Alan

Hi Neil,

I have a Citroen C5 Estate with the 2.0i 110bhp engine. I bought it specifically for towing but was rather disappointed with the result. I went down the 'chipping' route and am a lot happier. The prob. with the Citroen is that it achieves max torque at 2000 rpm which equates roughly to 60mph in fifth gear. All right for the motorway but an underachiever on single carriageway roads.

I have a Dragon Chip (www.mrhoot.com)which has the benefit of not only being removable and therefore can be resold but can be adjusted to give maximum performance when towing but reduced power when not towing.

I must agree with the views of the previous comments re. Insurance. Its too late After the accident if they find the chip and you haven't told them
