Hi a question for any freelander mechanical experts out there.

My freelander 2001 td4 has developed a whining on the near side front wheel. Does anyone know if this could be the bearing or could it be a dry half shaft?

Are the bearing sealed?

Thanks in advance

Hello Gill,

with the best will in the world it is not possible for any forum member to accurately diagnose the noise you report. simply because we can't hear it.

At best the members could only guess, and they might be wrong or right. the only way you will find out for sure is to have a knowlegable person actually listen and test it in some way.

With an issue like a wheel bearing or other important transmission matters, safety must come first, and I strongly recommend you have a garage investigate.

Hi Gill,

A way to check if the wheel bearing is gone is to jack the effected wheel up off the ground (make sure you chock another wheel, on a 4x4 the handbrake works on the propshafts and not the brake shoes and it will be rendered useless if a wheel is jacked up).

If the bearing is gone then the wheel will rock on its axle side to side or up and down ( it will feel as if thewheel is loose)

Unless you can see any signs of leakage from the bearings through the centre of the wheel then it doesn't sound as though it could be a dry half shaft.

Hope this helps

Rob
