Can anyone help here? The fridge on my Bailey Ranger 620/6 07 model does not work whenn connected to my VW Touran 170 sport.

I am sure I read here sometime about modification to car which enables car to run fridge on move.

Would be very gratefull if someone can help as we are on our annual run to the sun in the Vendee region of France and would like the beer to be cold when I arrive on site.

Cheers Wayne.

First thing to ask is did you have the engine running when you checked if th efridge was not working?, may sound silly but many people do not realise that it only works when engine is running!

Secondly have you checked that the 12s socket is actually wired for the fridge, many dedicated fitments do not include the fridge supply.

Wayne,

Do you have on the car twin 7 pin sockets (12n, black & 12s grey or white) or the factory fitted (or dealer fitted)13 pin socket.

If its the 13 pin one open the flap & check that there are actually contact pins in terminals 10, 11, 12 & 13 Factory & dealer fit these ARE NOT present youhave to ask for the optional extra fridge modifiacation kit!

However as Damian quite rightly states the engine MUST be running to activate the voltage sensitive relays which operate the fridge & caravan battery charging

Remember that on 12v, the fridge will not effectively cool down, it will only be able to hold a temperature if you have pre chilled it down at home.

George

I have twin plugs 12s & 12n fitted, I have checked the output with test light with engine running and everything seems fine.

It was suggested by the person who fitted the bar that output of car is insufficient when running aircon and all other electrical items, he suggested turning off A/C and reving the engine to switch fridge relay and this does not work.

I seem tov remember reading here that some re wiring of socket was required maybe secondary earth wire.

The caravan and fridge have just been checked and were all ok.

Maybe someone will remember earlier instruction.

Wayne.

I think the bit about revving the engine & turning a/c off is bollox! Check the wiring again on your 12s socket. There should be one permanent live (pin4)& one ignition live (pin6). There should also be 2 earths, pin3 & pin7. Pin 7 is the fridge earth and is the centre one. If these check out ok then the fault is either the van socket, van wiring, or your not operating the switches in the van correctly.

Have you checked the fuse for the 12V element, mine was under the bed box, it had blown, also the fridge switch burnt out, I suspect that the 12volt element has had its day.

Another common problem is the centre pin of the caravan 12s plug squeezing together and providing a poor earth for the fridge, you need to get a thin knife blade and "open up" the segments of the pin to ensure a reliable earth return.
