Galaxy Vs Mondeo

Morning all!

Company is offering me the choice of a Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDI (130) Zetec or Ford Galaxy 1.9 TDI (115) LX. The Mondeo is the nicer spec, but not too bothered about that- I just want the best towcar.

Mond is approx 1400 kerb weight with the Galaxy being 1724. Looking at getting a new Senator series 5 this year to replace our Ranger.

So do I go for more power and less kerb weight, or the other way around? I guess the Galaxy has the added benefit of being able to put the bikes in the back too?

Hi Paul

I personally wouldn't have a Galaxy, I have one at the minute, (but it's up for sale), and the rear suspension spring coil collapsed last Thursday, parts are very expensive!

Each to their own, but I would advise you have another think

If you're looking to change to a Senator, get the Galaxy for it's weight. As it's a company car, cost of spares/repairs won't concern you!

Paul,

Tricky one because one has an obvious power to weight advantage the other one has an obvious tow car to van ratio.

Both well proven, I think as longer term your looking at a heavy van the Galaxy gives you opportunity's and the space that a Mondeo won't. But the Mondeo is far quicker and has more dynamic flair. It depends on you driving style against your sensible head.

Go for the Mondeo. Pulling power is second to none and they can shift too. As it's a company car, maintenance and any problematic issues won't cost you anything.

Go for the hatch (easy access to the boot).

ijust checked the kerbweight of my mondeo estate on my logbook which is under the Heading mass in service and it weighs in at 1564 kg ,allthough the ford book has it down as 1590 kg ,but as its a company car i would go for the Galaxy it does not really matter if you have to put your foot down harder if your not paying for it ,lorry & van drivers are doing it all the time plus you will have the extra stability with the added kerbweight , the Galaxy ,Alhambra ,Sharan ,are virtualy the same car ,the Alhambra and the Mondeo are both given a good write up the what car website

In principle, all other things being equal, the Galaxy should make the better towcar. The only thing which makes your decision more difficult is that the Galaxy you are being offered has 15hp less. That really makes it a swings and roundabouts issue.

Lolly's bad experience with the collapsed suspension is surely an isolated occurence.

Whether the fact that the Galaxy is coming to the end of its production life has any bearing on the matter is also up to you.
