We're on our second cheap portable - the first lasted about 8 or 9 summers. My main advice would be to get one which cleans easily - after all, you have to pack it up and transport it afterwards!

We have had a Cadac for the last 2 years and it is an excellent piece of kit.

Pros: Built to last, easy to clean, versatile, packs away into carry bag

Cons: Heavy, expensive

We also have a Cadac we also have to take an electric wheelchair with us and as the cadac is heavy it all adds to the caravan weight. We have thought of the Buo Clare but are unsure of the weight so if anyone as this we would love to hear about it please.

I have had a Beauclaire bbq for the last 4 years and find it excellent. They are a bit on the heavy side (most of the weight is in the actual griddle) but they pack away neatly and are easy to assemble.

Usual down side is keeping it alight when it is quite windy, wind break is essential.

Tried the cheap BBQs they can give inconsistant heat, last year bought a Webber BBQ with a trolley stand and carry bag. it is fantasic!

Good size grill, portable, dome lid and very controlable heat.

It is a bit neater than the Cadac.

Look at Birstall Garden Centre on line they offer the best prices and very good delivery.

Happy Grilling

I feel you really need to decide your caravanning lifestyle before looking at particular models of BBQ. If you like to go to one particular site and stay then a larger, more efficient BBQ makes sense. It can be stored in the main body of the van for travelling and erected once on site. If however, you like to do a lot of touring then a BBQ that is occupying floor space is maybe not such a good idea. Here a smaller, possibly less efficient model will supply all you wish and be able to be stored out of the way until required. BBQ's are only one part of he fairly extensive kit that we all seem to carry these days and need to be considered as part of the total package.

My wife and I adopt the latter category and therefore use the small box shaped gas BBQ's that were introduced by Calor some years ago. The lava rock base is good enough for cooking anything especially in the sun of the Med, and yes, it maybe isn't up to Weber standards but that is acceptable to us. With a bottle of chilled white wine who cares. It also hides away in an under seat locker when not required. We also use an electric grill as an alternative, this grills extremely well but of course doesn't provide the 'smoky' flavour.

The other factor to consider is how many, and the ages of the people in your party. If there are just 2 elderly adults like us then a smaller model is fine. If you have teenage sons, and we have been through that, then a much larger model is definitely required.

I have used a BBQ made by Outback it has aluminium body with cast iron grill with griddle section it works very well and can if you wish be completely stripped down for cleaning.

Having seen the cadac type they seem to me to be no more than a gas burner with a griddle plate on,are very heavy, bulky and seem to cook very fast, and I mean fast! But you pays your money....

Sorry Tony, but the Cadac is a BBQ, you get the grill and stir fry pan as an extra if you want them. They do not cook any different from any other BBQ, so to say they cook at a higher heat is nonsense IMO.

I manage very well with the disposable type. You can carry a couple with you or buy them at your destination if there is a supermarket nearby. They are also very light. A stand of some sort is needed though. Then when it is finished, pour some water on it and bin it. No cleaning.

we just wipe our cadac with paper wipes which garages etc use .If you do it while it is still warm virtually everything comes off and then wash it at the end of the weekend.Did breakfasts on griddle smooth side or on the wok thingy and works well.
