We just bought a gas BBQ to attach to our BBQ point on the side of the van. The only downside is the length of the lead which means you are cooking close to the van. I was going to add a new lead, to make it longer...are their any restrictions on how long this can be?

There is a debate about the permissible length of flexible neoprene gas hose. Some caravan dealers are claiming they can only sell it in lengths up to 1M and no longer, whilst others are happy to supply longer lengths.
I am not aware of any regulation that places a numerical limit on the length of a hose, but it is good sense to keep them as shorty as is reasonably possible.

Remember the longer the hose the longer it will take to light initially as the pipe will be full of air. Our hose is about 3 m long and no problem.
