Hi all, what I know about gas you could probably fill the back of a first class stamp with so thought best to ask what may be a silly question, my son in law has just been given a full 15kg bottle of gas, I think he said its calor blue bottle, as I say it's full or feels full, the person who gave it to him said at some point it had been frozen, possibly on more than one occasion, my question for those of you in the know is does freezing make it any less safe to use or is it perfectly ok as soon as it thaws, thanks in advance.

Dont worry there is nothing to be concerned about.
The gas here Butane does not really freeze in the sense of going solid at temperatures we encounter.
What happens at low temps, from ambients of 4 to 6 C downwards is that the gas fails to evaporate from the liquid form it is stored in within the bottle. Hence failing in gas supply to the appliances and the miss used term "frozen".
As things warm up then all returns back safely.
This gas Butane, "blue" by convention is fine for summer caravanning but as things get colder it reaches a point where it will not gas off either adequately from about 6 C to at all from 0C so its not suitable for winter caravanning.
What we use in winter and all year without problems is Propane, sold typically in Orange/red bottles; this does not "freeze" untill minus 42 C when I for one would not be caravanning.

In the past I have worked part time filling gas cylinders.
The cylinders are kept out side all year round, so no problems in the heat of summer or the cold of winter
