Gas danger

Just got caravan back after a service during which the electric element in the fridge was changed.

Arrived at a non electric site and turned on the gas to start the fire and fridge and noticed a smell of gas after a while.

Turned off the gas and called out the local MCEA engineer, as we were 500 miles from the dealer who did the service. He arrived within the hour and found that when the element was changed the gas pipe to the fridge was disconnected and not reconnected.

The service record shows the gas system was checked and was ok. Either this was done before the element was changed or it was not checked.

The caravan dealer has agreed to pay the invoice from MCEA as it was there mistake but the matter matter is now in the hands of my solicitor as this could have had fatal consequences

I will not name the dealer but I urge every one to check the gas before leaving the dealer after a service

I will post the outcome of my solicitors dealings with the dealer

That is the type fo dealer who probably does not do a PDI on tghe caravan. Absolutely frightening and could have easily resulted in a death or even deaths. They need to be nailed to the wall!

This dealer will propably be able to undertake the electrical PIR if it ever becomes compulsory. Why should an owner have check the gas system after it has been 'signed' of as checked by the dealer. What else should be checked prior to leaving the dealer e.g. wheel nuts.

I believe you should report the dealership to its trade association and the Health and Safet authorities.

The pressure test will have been done with the fridge isolator for the gas in the OFF position, only way it could have past a gas check.

I am sure of this because i used a workshop approved mobile fitter, who gas tested my van with ALL the taps closed, he never entered the caravan.

I am surprised at that,I am Gassafe registered for Natural gas,LPG and mobile homes and was instructed it is essential to have all appliance 'live' with gas and cooker lids up so gas is supplied to closed side of taps.If there is a drop in pressure closing isolating valves one at a time helps track down the leak but closing the valves for the test only checks part of the system.

The dealer is in Somerset. I cannot give more details as there are a number of other dealers close bye and it would be unfair to name the town as suspicion may fall on them

i also am gasafe registered and have never heard of anyone testing any installation with the isolating valves closed, it would completely negate the whole purpose of the test.

to do a test first and then carry out repair work without testing again on completion is also a major no-no.

your dealer has quite clearly not carried out the appropriate checks, which you have paid for, and which he legally must do.
