Gel batteries can be used where there is no external ventilation, such as within the van's habitation space. They do not require it.They are often used by German caravan designers specifically because of this attribute, requiring no "external battery locker".
A conventional battery must not be used within the van's habitation area unless it has piped external gassing ventilation.
The more expensive Gel battery is better able to withstand lower levels of discharge without the same degree of damage, where comparing similar quality batteries.
Whilst I would not consider replacing my Gel with a wet battery as I have had exceptional service from the two I have had, you can change for a cheaper wet one as long as you provide this gassing ventilation. You will also need to adjust the inbuilt charger to a "wet" battery charge configuration or its charge routine will in the longer term shorten the batteries life.
