George Forman Grill - is the wattage too high to use when car...

We have a large George Forman grill which we bought a few years ago and have hardly used. We were about to buy a gas barbeque but a friend suggested using the George Forman instead, pointing out that we'd be running it off the EHU which we've paid for rather than having to buy gas as well.

Our concern is whether it will blow the fuse on the EHU. The electrical info sticker on the bottom state that it's 1800w-2200w. We would be using it outside instead of the BBQ so would probably only be running the fridge at the same time. Any thoughts from you technical wizards please? We'd rather avoid the embarrassment of overloading the EHU if possible but it would be a useful saving if we could utilise it.

Thanks in anticipation

Hi Claire and Rob

You would be drawing about 10 amps from the site electrical supply. On a site offering 16 amps, such as a Caravan Club site, this would be no problem, but if you travel on the continent where the supply is generally less than ten amps (sometimes a lot less!!) you would certainly blow the site fuse.

If you are going to use the appliance outside, please be particulaly careful that it is in good condition, especially it's wiring and plug as you are much more at risk from electric shock when standing on earth.

Regards

Keith

Hi Clair Rob, I had one of the large George Formans, It was o.k but i found it to be a pain to clean as it seemed to take ages.keithj comments about the safety aspect of it are worth thinking about. We purchased a Cadac delux from riversway leisure and found that much better to be honest and a lot easier to clean and also gives you more cooking options.Hope this helps.

Thanks for all your replies. We've booked mainly CC sites this year so we might use it this year then look for a gas BBQ in the end of season sales.

Thanks for concerns expressed over electrical safety - it is in perfect condition as we've only used it a couple of times. I seem to remember that the cleaning aspect put me off so the useful tip re using wet kitchen roll is very welcome. It did come with 2 scraper tools as well which we've still got. I would like to get some use out of it as it's just sitting in the original box on top of my freezer at the moment. We think we're going to get a Camping Gaz Camp Kitchen Extra when we get round to buying a Gas BBQ as it can be used a a twin burner stove too.

Thanks again all - now just need some sunshine so we can do the outdoor cooking thing!
