Hi everyone, I wonder could anyone suggest a good site for us to stay on for a week or so with 3 small children this August? We haven't been to France before and honestly don't know where to start - so would really welcome some personal recommendations! We have somewhere in mind to stay overnight around Calais but as from there on I am at a loss as France is SUCH a huge place!:)

I have had some great advice from this forum regarding which general areas to stay but finding a site is proving more difficult.

Thanks so much in advance for any suggestions

Sharon

Many many years ago when our girls were young we went to the Carnac area and La Trinite.

The Quiberon peninsular helps protect the Carnac sandy beach

and Vannes walled city and markets and the hundreds of small islands give you plenty to see.

Weather can be changeable in Brittany and if you don't mind driving you can adventure past St-Nazzire and down onto the West coast for a different perspective and some more sun on a day out.

We don't advise on sites, but there are plenty to choose from.

But we found that area great for a young family and friends have a productive mobile home rental near Carnac.

Drive from Calais is quite easy as our most destinations in France.

Give the sites a call if you have any doubts most if not all speak English.

My youngest daughter was taken ill at Carnac with Tonsolitis, camp site was wonderful with help. We got a local English speaking Doc to see who gave her the best treatment we have ever known. French prescribed Anti Biotics worked better than anything ever prescribed in the UK as well, she had annual visits for a few years. As soon as she saw the sea she got Tonsilitis.

Sharon,

Have a look at www.les-castels.com, they have sites in most regions, mostly set within the grounds of chateaux or manor houses. We have stayed at 3 different sites in the castels chain previously and are booked on our fourth this summer (L'etang de la Breche) and have been very pleased with each of them. They are probably a little bit more expensive than some but at least we feel that we know what to expect.

Hi Sharon, we went to Royan, 2 years ago to a site called Clairefontaine. www.camping-clairefontaine.com we found this ideal for the children. It is a 300m walk to the beach, there is a pool with lifeguard, in the evening they have spanish dancers etc. The site had mostly young families and really catered for them. In the evening you can walk to the beach and they have a light display, which was fascinating and we saw it 3 times. On the down side it is nearly 500 miles from Calais and with small children we know can be difficult. Although now one of ours has a dvd player and the other one plays on his playstation. Bliss. This year we are going to a castells site in Normandy, which is 295 miles from Calais. Happy holidays, Mark

Hi Sharon, I dont know if you have had any luck yet.We are off to St Jean de Monts in August.I see you've got kids and the beaches here are fantastic with what I call real bucket and spade sand. The area itself is really good (third time returning)try Camping Les Alizes in Notre Dame de Monts (next town up for any available pitches.

Regards

Terry

Which ever site you end up on if you get time go to Apremont where the river is dammed into a big lake with sandy beach and pedlos etc for hire. Also try the velorail between Coex and Commequiers its great fun the kids will love it,if it is hot take a parasol and some tape to fasten it on the front for shade.get there early so that you have right of way ,if you go you will find out what I mean, have a good one.

We have just got back yesterday from a 3 week stay at a site called La Garangeoire in St Julien Des Landes in the Vendee region.

Excellent Les Castels site, with everything for kids. Large swimming pool with childrens area, Water slides, large play area, Pony Rides, Bike Hire, Bar/Restaurant/Take Away, Lake, Tennis etc.

Our baby is only 11 months old but are already making plans for a return trip!!

Just down the road from Apremont if you fancy following the advice of The Plotter

Cheers

Richard

I have stayed at La Foret 4 or 5 times in the early 90's but just fancied a change this time. It is also a very nice campsite with comparable facilities

Went to Apremont but just for a drink didn't do the Velorail but there is always next year, just waiting for the baby to grow!!
