Government stats on trailers

I came across this file today and it makes interesting reading. It seems that in the previous year to 2018, there were 158 accidents involving caravans. It also seems that many accidents involving trailers were due to overloaded or poorly loaded vehicle or trailer which had 31 records for collisions involving vehicles towing, but which would not be identified in a roadworthiness test. Somehow I doubt very much if much as changed since 2017/2018.

Sorry I missed it however it makes interesting reading especially regarding caravans. No wonder they are reluctant to make caravan registrations and MOTs mandatory as the cost is not worth it, but how do you place a cost on a human life?

I have searched high and low for the legislation regarding the attachment of the breakaway cable as per another post. No luck, but came across many so called respected websites quoting the method of attachment to the eye as law?

In one of my later jobs we were involved with formal safety cases for defence equipment and one of the facets in the studies would be to compare probability of accidents, consequences. There came a time in each study where a comparison between the costs of introducing more safety features or procedures was higher than the cost to human life. The cost basis came from various sources of which HSE was one. The nuclear industry do it as a matter of course.

One of the downsides of specialist magazines like PCv and its Forum is the continuing change of reader membership. Whilst us old lags will recall your previous posts Clive new readers I am sure will find Buckman’s link of interest. The magazine itself over the years does repeat a lot of stuff I already know but someone younger and newer will love the info.

A good point Dusty, and it could also be used as a test of mental acuity too for us aged readers.
