Ive just spent a fortnight on CL's around the country, and have notice that some people empty the waste water in the hedge or don't even bother with a container with a hose leading off towards the hedge, is this normal practice? will this not make the pitches smell? is washing up liquid/shower gel/soaps etc supposed to be treated by the sewage processes? am i just making work for myself, or filling the ses tanks unnecessarily.

What do you do?

In the bottom of the hedge, or around tree roots. Some sites actually to do this, particularly if the have septic tank drainage. And, no it doesn't smell because the rain or dew help it soak into the ground. And it saves carrying it!

Hi

I think it depends on the owner. If he catches you doing something he's not happy about, I'm sure he'd say something.

We've been on sites where the owner has asked us to put the waste water in the hedge. Didn't notice any funny smells. Correct me if I am wrong but soapy water can even be used on gardens.

When I was young we had a static caravan, which we occupied for the whole of the summer holiday.

This was in the days before full connection of services to statics - so it was like a seasonal tourer pitch now, but no electrics!

Grey water was run into the wood alongside the pitch, and in a dry summer yopu could see where everybodies outlet ended by the patch of green vigourous growth.

Never noticed any problem with smell, even though the outlet was in the same place all season.

David from Suffolk owns a CL and I recall him saying he prefers his clients to empty their grey water around the shrubs etc.
Lord B

Yes you are right, our soil is very sandy and dries out quickly, we have a row of trees on the boundary but one is not near a pitch hence misses out on the Grey water, its easy to see which tree it is, some of our regulars have adopted it and now make certain it gets some Grey water, remember most detergents are high in nitrates and phosphates just what the trees need.

Hedge, shrubs or if there is neither then the edge of the field.

I can't abide people just running water directly onto a pitch, particularly if its a marked pitch as you make the ground wet for the next camper.

In a similar vein is it just me now or do people pull their van off the pitch and then get out of the car to do a double check that there is no rubbish, pegs or other stuff lying about?
