Has anyone else got this infernal cold which is going around?

My parents both have it and been quite rough. Not sure if I gave it them or vica-versa. For me mainly started as a bit of an silly dry cough and hoarse throat early December. Second week of December, silly dry cough became a productive cough , constant hacking and coughing with associated crud on chest and snotty nose. I think I've just completed the fourth week of it. Weird thing is, I haven't felt all that ill with it, but god that cough has been driving me up the wall. I don't like to speak too soon but I may finally be on the mend with it. I've thought that a few times and been wrong, but the time it has been taking to shift it's unbelieveable. I don't smoke, but I do vape which I've kept to a minimum. Got a trip booked for new year in the van, tentative depending on how things progress over next few days, but I will probably go provided the night time coughing carries on decreasing... Don't want to be keeping the site awake. Finger s crossed.

Our son and his partner arrived for Christmas with the dry hacking cough. They had been affected with it for at least two weeks.

Appears to be a widespread issue, I have several friends in exactly the same situation, and my sister has been hospitalised with 'Flu! (She is in her late 70's ).

I'm told that the population generally has low immunity to ordinary diseases due to all the shielding, isolation and face masks over the last couple of years - the only way to fix it is to get exposed to these illnesses to build up immunity again.

After my radiotherapy treatment my throat was dry for many months afterwards and was only just starting to recovery when I went back to the dry throat and coughing. I was getting very worried so reading this thread has made me feel better.

Not the cough and cold but on the first day of Christmas when we collected our grandson and daughter from the airport, he brought with him Chickenpox - fresh that day. Fortuntately we've had it and had the vaccination against Shingles.

Grandson (aged 2) was really poorly with what we thought was a cold. We had him the week before Christmas as his mum was in work. He developed a rash and it turned out he had Strep A. He is getting better on antibiotics. We now both have sore throats, dry coughs and feeling rough. Probably Strep A as well. However, not generally a huge problem in healthy adults.
There is a lot of Strep A about, apparently lock Downs met that the kids didn’t get it and so immunity waned.

Hope you all get well soon Mel. Went over to caravan today to prepare it for Thursday. Felt a bit rubbish and a bit sweaty but did a bit of dusting inside and fitted new stabiliser pads. Coughing less, apart from first thing in the morning, but feel a bit generally run down. Came home and got into bed. Slept for two hours which is unusual, don’t normally sleep when I go for a lay down. Hoping with a good kip tonight and a lazy day tomorrow, I’ll be in good stead for Thursday.

This cold has been insane purely for the length of time it has lasted. I would rather have had fully on symptoms for a week or two and just got it over with.

I hope everyone gets over their coughs and colds.
I have had a dry cough for many years, and have had X-rays etc, my GP told me to try a nasal spray for Hay fever, in the mornings, and for me at least, it does relieve my cough during the day.

After a severe coughing fit this morning, I decided to cancel my new year trip. I decided it just won’t be enjoyable so what’s the point? Even the campsite owner said the weather there is awful and that it “wouldnt be much fun anyway”.

Going to see GP tomorrow . Don’t normally bother GP over stuff like this but it’s gone on for so long and I’ve been getting breathless.

Hoping to do my trip in a couple of weeks time if I finally start to feel better. Short notice holidays are not really an issue with my work so I can pick my weather to some extent.

Hi Mel. Glad to know your grandson is now improving and will soon be back fighting fit and up to all the usual things that toddlers enjoy. Thankfully both of you are recovering also and are able to enjoy this special time with him, it goes by so quickly but memories are great. Hoping the New Year brings you all you wish for also health and happiness.

Right decision on the trip. No point if you are not going to enjoy it. Also right decision on the GP. Coughing for a month warrants an appointment.

Hi Chris hope the outcome is favourable when you see the doctor and you can look forward to many happy holidays in the caravan when you are back to full health.

Everything seems to be going round at the moment. One daughters family have had tonsillitis and the rest of us have had various cold like illnesses some more than others. It seems to be what the doctor describes as " I don't know what it is, but there is a lot of it around".

Unfortunately I had to take OH to A&E on Wednesday evening for something unrelated to this cold. It was Thursday evening before they could attend to her as A&E was extremely busy.

Annoyingly it was the hospital that phoned and told her she needs to come into the hospital urgently! However good news is that I was able to bring her home on Friday evening, but had to take her back again on Saturday morning although OH was able to come home again last night.

A&E is full of people with flu or colds and they had two beds in each cubicle separated with a partition. A&E were simply overwhelmed and were struggling to cope.

On Friday morning my BIL who lives alone and has severe Parkinson fell and became disoriented but managed to ring 999. No ambulance came until 2120 that evening after my wife had also rang 111 three times. The paramedics phoned us and were brilliant and took him to Coventry AE where he is still waiting to be admitted to a specialist ward for further assessment. Looks like another unscheduled trip along the Fosse Way is on the cards.

Hope your wife is feeling better.

I have had a productive cough for 4 days now. waiting for it to develop into a full blown cold. supposed to be going to a party today, but cancelled. Tomorrow evening we should be taking two of the great grandchildren to a panto and trying to find alternatives. I don't think it would be fair on others for me to go.

I went to two chemists and two shops yesterday for some night nurse. One chemist said they just cannot get hold of it or other cold remedies. But he reminded me that night nurse is not suitable for diabetics.

Thursday I ended up being sent A&E by doctor worried about low oxygen levels. Spent the day on a trolley in a corridor on oxygen. They tried taking it off at one point and the monitor alarmed three mins later wndcso they put it back on. Hours later about 7:30pm, I was assessed. Consultant decided to turn off oxygen to see what hapened. As the oxygen levels on the monitor started dropping, he must have only given it 30 secs before quickly turning off the machine and discharging me! Basically needed to get rid. Hopefully I don’t end up with hypoxia. Bloods showed no bacterial infection so antibiotics no use. Whole thing felt like a waste of everyone’s time.

John Radcliffe A&E complete chaos btw. Wasn’t so much as offered a. Glass of water in six hours. People running around like headless chickens. Just awful.

I’m afraid I’m very skeptical when it comes to these cold / cough remedies. I've tried various brands of snake oil potions in the past and found at best any effect to be temporary and brief. Indeed the NHS website suggests what I’ve always suspected, that there is little unbiased scientific evidence behind these medicines.

I honestly believe the only “remedy” is plenty of water and rest. Take painkillers if / when necessary. If you feel that the various potions on sale help then fill yer boots (no pun intended). I remain unconvinced.

I also remain stuck with this hideous cough after four weeks. I can’t even lay down as I would like to do as that triggers coughing fits. Every day I feel exactly the same. No improvement. Absolutely had enough of this bloody thing.

NHS normally advise plenty of fluids, rest and if possible fresh fruit. A teaspoon or two of honey in your tea instead of sugar is helpful and also very nice. (y) :D

Raw onion, garlic and Ginger ,in equal quantities, crushed up and all mixed together with Honey, sounds awful, but good for sore throats and colds.
Hot Rum Toddies work well for me.
Happy New Year everyone.
