Thousands of motorists risk being fined up to £1000 for driving without a valid driving licence. The pink photocard licence has a 10 year automatic expire date. It will cost you £17.50p to renew the card. It is estimated to earn the treasury nearly half a billion pounds over 25 years they forgot to tell us that when the idea was sold to us about photocrds.

The critical data "4b" On the back of the pink photocard, on the left-hand side,in tiny writing,it says "4b licence valid to".

Now turn the card to the front look for 4b and the date next to this is your licence expire date.

I suppose we will all be connned when these ident cards come in ????????

A very valid point Stephen.

My photo card licence expires 2010, but the paper part goes until 2029.

This realy needs publishing to all caravanners as in europe the photo card is the legal document they rely upon.

Im sure you would not like to end up in a Spanish jail because of not being able to read the small print on your photo card licence.

I do think it's a rip off having to pay for renewals of only one part of our licences.

This topic has already hit these boards a few months back.

With the key bit being you should be sent a reminder, never the less,if no reminder is sent, just like your passport, which also needs renewing every ten years, for much the same reason, new photo as people do change, I do not see why some are trying to make a fuss about it or indeed make some sort of issue concerning "cost" "rip off" as at just under

Splitting hairs somewhat, Its a photo licence, it has nothing to do with which part is which, the card bit and the paper bit make up the licence, its not one part for use here or there.

I suppose another option would be to keep the same photo for 45 years!although that would be ridiculous.so red tape does not come into it.

And if

Emmerson, maybe I am missing the point, but surely when put into perspective with things like. heating cost and fuel costs, which incidentally should be so much more lower now given the prices of oil and gas compared to earlier this year, and the fact that companies rather than the government is to blame for this rather grotesque rip off of

What would you prefer - a straightforward punch on the jaw, or a sneaky jab to the back of the head? A thief who rifles through your bag in front of you, or one who pilfers from it when you're not looking?

If you've got any sense, your reply would probably be "neither", but we're talking tax here.

As far as Labour's eight years in power are concerned, the approach has been very much towards the sneaky jab or the quiet pilfer.

Almost a decade ago, in the long run up to Labour's landslide 1997 victory, Tony Blair told us he had "no plans to increase tax at all".

The key word there was "plans". Since 1997 Labour has brought in 157 tax-raising measures. That's according to economic think-tank The Institute for Fiscal Studies, which also tells us that in the same time Chancellor Gordon Brown has introduced 215 tax-cutting measures.

But the tax hikes have raised more for the Exchequer than the tax cuts have cost it, with the result that the Government is scooping an extra 2.1 per cent of national income in revenues than it was when Labour came to power, equivalent to

Excellent post Stephen concerning taxations. And indeed you might even convince a few nodding dogs that photo licence renewal falls into that category, except it DOES NOT !

using your very inaccurate view point on photo licences, one can only assume we should be attacking with even more vigar the situation concerning the huge rise in the cost of passports, and no doubt how that too is a stealth tax !!

Even your grass statement that over 25 years it will earn whatever government is in place 500 million pounds, wow 20 million a year! When everything any government does is in 100s of millions or billions a year, wow what a tax that is! What about the dvla? do they not have to implement this? do you have the numbers as to how much it will cost them to implement this renewal system?or do you think that's irrelevant? Hows going to pay for them to implement this new system?

Thats right us,with our 17.50 renewal fee!!!!

Stealth tax! what a joke.....

NEW Stealth Tax on the way.

Drivers could face health tests every 10 years to ensure they are fit to be behind the wheel. Drivers Face Regular Health MOTs Motorists would be able to choose whether to take the tests, but risk a criminal record if they are later found to fall short of standards, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The idea would be for drivers to declare themselves fit to drive every decade, with the option of submitting themselves to tests against new minimum physical and mental requirements.

Issued by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, they are likely to cover eyesight and reaction times.

The paper says the proposals are set to be unveiled in the New Year, A Department for Transport official quoted it will only cost the License about

Don't forget the article on they want to start fitting speed limiters to cars as well.

As I hold a HGV licence,I will soon have to have medical tests anyway.and the cost varies depending on the GP. So what makes Jo bloggs driving a car so special that he doesn't have to have a medical on a more regular basis?
