should have mentioned got a bailey ranger 510/4 with thermostat on the wall

cheers people

I'm going to take a guess and say the thermostat belongs to the Truma ultraheat system?

If so then it's probably a few years old and the actual temperature sensor is in that control switch on the wall?

If I'm correct the problem is; in this position the sensor is more affected by the temperature behind it that the room temperature of the van, result is it's near impossible to set or keep an even temperature.

If thermostat is in the wardrobe space above the heater? a simple test is to leave the doors open and the cloths well away from the back of the switch to allow air to circulate freely. If the heating now works more or less as you'd expect, then you've confirmed the reason for the problem.

Solution is simply to fit a remote temperature sensor.

Marky p,

One of the main considerations when winter caravanning is to avoid condensation, and to be comfortable at all times.

After many years of winter caravanning i do as follows.

Before going to bed turn the heating down a few degress, put one window at the front of the caravan and one at the rear on the night catch. This will allow air to circulate and help avoid condensation. If possible leave all sliding and concertiner doors open, to allow full air circulation.

It could take a couple of nights to get the temperature to your preference.Start with the temp higher than you think neccersary and reduce gradually.

Make sure nothing is covering the temp control.

As Gary says fitting a remote sensor gives you more precise control over the heating.

I concur with the previous replies, but add that comfort setting is a very personal choice, and it is usually a matter of trial and error.

if it is an ultraheat system as previously suggested, the remote thermostat would be best option, because again as previously suggested the thermostat is in wall switch, replacement kit fits down next to the gas thermostat where the ambient temp air is drawn in so is a worthwile upgrade.
