Hi,

I found this site through the magazine. We are fairly new caravanners, we have had our Abi Monza almost 2 years. After getting drenched in our tent in the Cotswolds one year, enough was enough, so when a family friend offered us his van at a bargain price we couldn't refuse! As luck would have it, we have a secure storage site just 2 mins from our flat! Now, you will lauigh, but we tow with a Vauxhall astra 1.4 petrol car. We have had many odd looks from other caravanners whilst on the motorway! Our caravan is extremely lightweight, you can manouvere it single handed! Now that we have mastered getting the packing and weight just right, it tows like a dream. One trick we have learned is getting the tyre pressures right certainly saves on fuel!

For its age, the caravan is immaculate, it is a 5 birth with a small washroom that we don't really use. We have added a zig charger unit, which is great and also re-wired the whole van.

our first break was to a local site just to do a run through and make sure everything worked, however as we were both so excited to get set up my hubby drove off with breakaway cable still attached! However, on ispecting it, it looked rather rusty and don't think it had ever been changed so that afternoon was spent at the local accessory shop buying a new one and dashing home for the battery we also forgot!!!

Happy caravanning

Andrea & Andy

Hi Andrea, welcome to the forum.

Like you we camped for years but got totally fed up with the rain, we bought our first van very cheaply two years ago from my Uncle, who was reluctantly selling his two berth swift silouette, there are three of us, so we all cramped up in the double bed for our first season, our daughter was 11 y/o at the time, so we knew we couldnt go on like that for long, but it was a way of getting used to our new hobby and we all found we loved the freedom.

We then traded it in for a 5 berth Ace Prestige, plenty of room now.

We are off for our first trip of this year next Tuesday for 5 nights, staying at Whitemead Forest of Dean, one of our favourite sites.

Trudy and Jay.
