Hi everyone, Jim here, just being polite & introducing myself & my Mrs to all you fellow caravanners on the PC forum.
We're not entirely new to the game having had a caravan (in this life) for 3 years & numerous years in previous lives when an Abbey Durham was around! (I think it had a gas mantle for heat & light)
Currently pulling a Pegasus GT65 Genoa with a 2013 Xtrail.
Looking forward to hearing tales & tips on our travels.

Yes a great site about a mile south of Pickering. Bus stop just outside as well.

Jimmy, the silly bunch of Woosies on here had a good weekend at Ingelton caravan site. Check the Woosieclub thread. There is also a lovely 5 pitch site nearer to the pub, if you like a pint or a wine.

I remember fitting gas mantles, the Whoomph, as you lit it the first time. . H and Saftey.

I'd forgotten until your post reminded me, it was always strange to see the mantle so loose and floppy in the packet, and the way after fitting, you had to light it without gas to harden the the fabric.

I have a nostalgic feeling about them. The quality of light, the smell, and the warmth they gave off., And the noise they produced. You could turn them down, which is not usually a facility offered these days. You mention H&S, and yes they were definitely risky, not only from the risk of fire but from the fumes. We actually did some tests on the products of combustion from a gas light. They were actually rather poor, and became significantly worse as oxygen levels reduced in a test space.

From a technical point of view, I'm glad we no longer use them, but thanks for the nostalgia trip.
