Help - Best route to Linwater, Edinburgh

Off to the Highland Show tonight and managed to get booked at Linwater, East Calder. The AA is sending me from North Shields, Tyne and Wear, all the way up the A1 through Berwick and then onto Edinburgh. Multimap sending me from North Shields up the A697 (Coldstream)then onto the A68. Lads at work suggest going along A69 towards Carlisle and then joining the A7. Totally confused! Any suggestions very welcome.

if it were me towing a caravan I would take the A1 route - join the A720 (Edinburgh bypass) then M8 to J3 (I think) for East Calder.

I think you would find the other roads very twisty and windy. The A1 is a mix of dual and single carriageway with quite a few speed cameras! but you get them everywhere now.

probably you would get a lot of different opinions, but the A1 is nice and straight and 80 percent of this road will be on dual carriageway/motorway - there is also services at Berwick (Morrisons, MacDonalds, etc) to stop at.
