I have an avondale chervit,91,when we where packing up at easter the metal break lead touched the connections of the gray lead that goes to the car to charge the battery. there seemed to be a bit of a spark and when i checked the caravan later nothing would work from the battery. everything seems to be working of the electric and the battery is showing full but something must have fused but i havent a clue what. i have booked to go to an non electric site soon and don't know what to do.can anyone help?

On my Bailey I have a bank of fuses covering the battery circuit. These are similar spade fuses as found on modern cars. Check these fuses and renew as necessary - there should be a 15 amp blue fuse which covers the battery circuit and then differing coloured lower rated fuses for various smaller 12 volt appliances.

You have most likely blown the main 12volt-battery supply lead fuse.

Locate your battery box..... this will be sealed from the inside of the caravan.

From inside the caravan, locate the back of the battery box .....usually under a front seat.

Find the main feed wire coming from battery box.

Trace it along until you find a fuse.... replace if blown with a fuse of same value.

If this fuse is not blown you have a more difficult problem to find which may be wiring related

Thanks colin, I have looked at all the fuses that are visible and the all seem fine, every thing is working off the electric so if a fuse was blown say for example the lights then why do they work of electric and not battery. forgot to mention that the gray cable connector has been badly worn and I asked someone about having it removed as we have no connection on our car but they told me just to tie it up that it did't matter. does anyone know if it would help fix my problem by replaceing or disconnecting this gray plug.

I have been looking through some of the problems on this site and could anyone tell me if i disconnect or replace the gray plug that connects to the car would this solve my problem. the plug is badly worn thats why the wire was able to touch and make a spark in the first place?

The reason that certain items work off the 240 volt and not the 12 volt is that they are wired on different circuits. Have the grey plug and wire tested before doing anything drastic as without this wire it will be impossible to keep the battery topped up when driving and also the van would be harder to sell on eventually without the grey wire - the prospective buyer would smell a fish that something is wrong with the electrics.

i don't have a connection on my car to charge the van when driving, thats how the gray plug got recked it was trailing the ground on one trip and is badly worn like i said. thats why the brake wire was able to touch it. there doesn't seem to be a fuse box like you describe near my battery and all the other ones seems fine.

I understand that you have shorted a pin on your grey plug, to the break lead?

This should cause no problem that i can see.

The grey plug takes power only from the car, for reverse light, fridge supply, and permanent supply. Short of a problem in your VAN wiring, no fuses should have blown.

Are you sure that your light switches are on?

the gray lead on my van was used to charge the battery from the car. all the stuff that did work from the battery before, no longer works from the battery so I have done damage somewhere. I know that the battery is ok and all the stuff is working from the electric power cant find any fuses that look blown so i think there must be a short in the wiring from the gray plug going to get an electrician to look at it next week hopfully he will be able to find the problem. thanks for you advice.Ill let everyone know how it goes. debs

yeaaa my little caravan is living again, thanks to my husband, he found the fuse that had blown.it was under the inverter box that is located with the battery. had to unscrew a few bits of wood to find it but he did. thanks for all your suggestions.
